MacBaren Scottish Mix

I guess it's an aromatic in that it has... some extra flavor added. But I couldn't tell you what it is, and it's certainly not the Danish/German style of "Take that black cavendish and dump cherry extract on it". It's subtle. A blend even.
And hey, when you get right down to it, very few pipe tobaccos aren't topped or cased in some or other fashion. Blenders have long used little secret flavor boosts, 2% anise solution as one example, to give a subtle but sort of undetectable "bonus" to blends.
Whatever, define it how you like, MB Mixture is a lovely smoke for those of us who tame it.

I have just smoked Mac Baren’s Scottish Mixture for the first time and I have some random thoughts:

1. Shout out to Sasquatch for giving me a valuable lesson in how to properly smoke a pipe, though I think I’m finally getting the hang of it after nearly two years of doing so in earnest
2. People keep calling this an aromatic, and it seems to be classified as such in various places, but to me it so much BETTER than the standard Cavendish and BC based flavored blends. That’s not to hate on the aro fans. I just don’t get much pleasure out of them the way I do with VAs, VaPers, English/Balkan blends or even Burley based smokes. Which brings me to this beauty.
3. I think MB Scottish might be a new favorite. I’m smoking it from bulk, though I did let it rest in a mason jar for a month. Not a lot of time, but the result was fantastic. Eager to try it more aged, and from a big, fat 100g tin!

Just opened a 10 year old 100 g tin of MacBaren Scottish Mixture. Smoked one bowl. Not bad stuff, just not my thing.

I am a fairly recent member, and as such am not allowed on the Sell/Swap/Search forum.

Don't want to discard this tobacco, as it might provide someone with hours of pleasure. So I will mail it to anyone who has a good hunch he might enjoy it. Please think about it, and don't just grab at it because it is free.

That's a very generous gesture! Also a very cool way to generate an organically developed sample/review thread. I'm gonna start doing this with blends that don't click with me!
