That's not necessarily true peck. I work for a company in which we import equipment from the US and sell to Cdn's in CDN dollars. So if I'm imported some equipment and trying to hold the same price as a year ago - I'm losing money. for example - a year ago the US dollar cost me $1.05 in CDN - today it costs me $1.32 in CDN for $1. therefore my price is going to go up relative because I deal in CDN dollars. Same for EU importing stuff from the US.
Actually that is really the same point. The Canadians in your example would pay more because you aren't exporting to them, so you have to charge more Cdn$ to be in the same position because your input costs have gone up in relative Cdn$ terms. The same would be true for Europeans who buy pipe tobacco. For Americans who buy pipe tobacco using US$ though, they are paying more in the Euro-dollar equivalent than they were before even if prices hold constant. Therefore as an exporter you are better off. It reminds me of a Canadian pipe maker I know. He loves it when the Canadian dollar is weak. Why? Because he makes more in Canadian dollar terms than he did before because most of his customers are in the US and they pay in US$. His input costs are also in US$, and they go up as a result, but the final selling price in US$ dwarfs the input costs.

Let me know when CD goes down in price because their EU sourced tobaccos cost fewer dollars. Let's face it, McB is raising prices because they think the market will bare the increase. They've been more aggressive than any other non-codger blender in advertising and relaunching their HH line as a premium product line. The goopers are still cheap.

MacBaren was underpriced before - we were getting 100 gm tins for the price most others were selling 50gm for, or not much more.

If you're looking to stock up check out site sponsor pipetobacco.com. They still have some Mac B at very good prices.

They still have my business on the 1 pound bags / boxes ... $2.75 an ounce is not expensive for tobacco.
+1, cobguy :)

macbaren recently introduced a new pricing policy for retailers, and set maximum allowed discounts. Not sure if these are really price increases people are seeing in terms of MSRP, or just adjustments to the new policy in terms of actual pricing of the product.
Either way, has nothing to do with the euro.

That's interesting..........

I usually buy from Smoking Pipes and they almost always offer a price break on 5 tins, more for 10 tins, etc. I noticed the other day that there is NO (quantity) price break for Macbaren tins, even if you buy 100.........

Just an observation, buy what you like...., me?.......I'll pass....... :puffy:

Why does "price leveling" sound so similar to price fixing? Lame.
When I was in business I guarantee you all that none of my customers would have swallowed that line.

A retailer can sell a product to their customer for whatever they want. But they have to list the price on their website or any other advertisement in accordance to pricing guidelines.
Just another reason to shop at your local b&m of you have a good one nearby.

I would roar but that discount does not apply to the 1 pound bags / boxes.
Edit: Looks like it does for some but it's not listed under the Vintage Syrian.

Patrick thanks for the info on the sale. I already have enough Mac blends so I will pass unless they have a 25% off sale and then I might think about it.

Well as a customer, I can tell you I didn't really buy MacBaren tins when they were 13.99$ over McClellend's which were 15.99$ Now as a customer if I were to pay the price MacBaren wants for a tin I'd just buy something like Astley's or Frigbourg and Tryor or Wessex or Reiner etc. which I considered out of my price range before.

I think Aristokles hit the nail on the head. The 100g tins are now among the most expensive out there. 'Leveling' would have been an increase of more like $1 or $2. I think this was a miscalculation on Mac B's part. With such an increase they are likely to sell far fewer tins now (may be their intention...). I mean, if I've got $25 to spend am I going to buy a 3.5 oz Mac B tin or an 8 oz tin of C&D?

Here is what I find interesting. Just using Smokingpipes' pricing for consistency:
100 gram tin of Mac Baren HH Bold Kentucky: $20.81, and if you multiply by 4.54 to get a pound it would cost $94.48 for a pound of tinned.

1 pound of Mac Baren HH Bold Kentucky Bulk: $48.53.

So the bulk price is 51.4% of the tinned, per pound.
100 grams tinned of Dunhill EMP is $18.50; converting to pounds that is $83.99/lb.

1 pound bulk Dunhill EMP: $53.71.

So the bulk price is 63.9% of the tinned, per pound.
MB HH tinned is a lot more than Dunhill, MB HH bulk is a lot less than Dunhill.
If you don't mind jarring or using mylar bags, bulk is still a good deal on MB HH.
