What are thoughts on C&D's Dark Fired Kentucky as a replacement for ODF? Are they similar in flavors & strength?

ODF is Kentucky/Virginia. CD DFK is just that. Think mainly used as a blending component, you could smoke it straight I suppose, but I doubt it would scratch that ODF itch
I've yet to try it myself, but G.L. Pease JackKnife Plug might scratch the itch. It won't be an exact copy of Old Dark Fired, since as far as I know C&D/G.L. Pease doesn't steam press their flakes or plugs like Mac Baren did, but it should be in the same sort of "Dark Fired Kentucky + a bit of Virginia with no added toppings" wheelhouse.
I think Jackknife would scratch the itch. Good rec.
I’ll echo the GL Pease Jacknife Plug recommendation. I smoked this and ODF to compare and the ODF was a little sweeter. The Jacknife had 10 years on it and it was similar in style, maybe earthier and more natural tasting. ODF has a casing that doesn’t jibe with me, but it does burn off.
I don’t think plain Dark Fired Kentucky would do it for you.
Not much help as it’ll be going into extinction, but Amphora Kentucky isn’t bad.
As for Pease, it’s not any replacement for ODF with its touch of rum, but Navigator is a very nice VaKy.

That’s what needs to happen.
You might consider Gawith and Hoggarth #7 Broken Flake and Coniston Cut Plug. These are blends of virginias and dark fired along with some burley with some flavorings. The closest blend to Old Dark Fired is actually St. Bruno. Despite St. Bruno having an aromatic Lakeland essence and less dark fired leaf both seem very similar if not the same in leaf content and production method along with that vinegary note.
They’re very different . The tobaccos are different. The woods used to smoke cure the tobacco are different.

Nothing will be close to ODF I don’t imagine. No one really does darkfired like the Gawith’s or Mac Baren I’ll say. Mac Baren was known to have extremely smooth DFK like none other, then ODF has that maple/vinegar note to it with a sweetness not in any other blends of similar stucture. War Horse was another unique Kentucky blend that was smooth as well, of course it will be missed and has no match!
In all honesty, I found MacB's DFK to be rather boring, so sure...
I was surprised at how much C&D's Maestro Sinfonia scratched the ODF itch, but with a bit more sweetness. Great sleeper IMHO.
It's such a waste that STG is going to destroy and sell the steam press as scrap instead of selling it to C&D.
I might suggest giving HU Indaba a shake.
As far as ODF is concerned, i prefer the flake to the RR, but Jack Knife and Amphora Kentucky are good recs to help fill the gap when it's gone. I smoke all three and enjoy all three. Just stocked up on the Amphora pouches.
