Stopped by the relic store today. Picked up a number of things. An old Kaywoodie box, a Dun Rite humidor and a bunch of tins including this Mac Baren's Burley. For a sawbuck I thought what the hell. While it's obvious the contents are dry as a bone, it has an appealing scent.
Do y'all have any thoughts, comments, suggestions on if I should plan on smoking it (if so suggestions on hydration at all?) or do the contents go to the trash?

Wow that’s a cool find. In my limited experience I have had good results when I rehydrated with 72 % Boveda packs. I put the tobacco and the Boveda in a gallon Ziploc freezer bag and after a few days good to go. I’m not sure how long it would take bone dry tobacco.

If I thought some rust particles were in the tobacco I’d use a magnet to try and remove them. I read that here somewhere but I’ve never done it.
I need to find some rusty tobacco.

Thanks for the tip.👍

However regarding the rust, with going in and out of auto, diesel, & body shops all day for 4 decades, I know I've huffed alot worse than a tad of corrosion.

Finding an old tin like that is fun.

In June 2012 I bought some unopened 7 oz. tins of MacBaren Symphony & Burley London Blend. Both had also been imported by Fireside Industries of New Jersey.

I was curious as to the age of these tins so I emailed Mac Baren & received the following reply from Per Georg Jensen:

"I have tried to find out when the 7 oz tins were taken out of the US market, but unfortunately I have not been able to find the facts. When Fireside Industries were the importer of Mac Baren tobacco we were selling 3,5 oz and later on 7 oz tins in the US. When Fireside stopped as our importer we also stopped the 7 oz tins. This was in the late 70ties, so the tins has to be dated from early to late 70ties."

It's definitely worth a try to slowly rehydrate the tobacco, use a gravity fill, & give it a whirl.

A lot of interesting comments I’ve had a rehydrate, I would go with smoking a bowl just to see how it is, no matter how you rehydrate well I shouldn’t say that I would use distilled water you don’t want mold. I bought an incredibly cheap mister bottle off of Amazon for like five bucks, use distilled water in it give it a spritz in a bag or jar seal it up good to go
