Want to see what a high quality operation Mac Baren is? Watch this quick video from Per Jensen, former master blender at the company until recently. Here we see beautiful whole leaf selected and then rolled into cakes, sliced and packaged. Enjoy. And stock up!

nice vid, thanks! Though I cannot believe every tin is hand-loaded, weighed on that little scale, and that the paper is hand-pinched and lid hand-sealed...? Would love to see that end of the line, too.

I agree. I think they hand loaded that tin for the camera. There must be an automated tinning line, no doubt.

I still rub out coins. The finer the cut, the more gently I smoke.

My main issue with most ways I've seen of loading coins is the inconsistency through the smoke, where one minute you're getting none of that Cavendish or whatever else is in the middle, then the next you're flooded with it. Some people might like the changing character with every puff, I'm just not one of them.

That's why I rub them out and mix it up like I would regular flake tobacco. Just smoke it easier like you would a shag.

Wondering what particular differences are between Dark Twist and Stockton, I asked my handy rabbit R1 pocket AI. Not a bad answer, and very interesting that it clearly accessed this very forum where a 2022 post about these roll cakes made the 'gutbuster' assertion.

Q: What is the difference or differences between Mac Baren Dark Twist Roll Cake and Mac Baren Stockton Roll Cake. Both tobaccos from the Mac Baren company.

A: The Mac Baren Dark Twist Roll Cake and the Stockton Roll Cake are both popular pipe tobaccos from Mac Baren, but they have distinct characteristics:

Mac Baren Dark Twist Roll Cake
Composition: This blend is made from sweet, mature Virginias and Dark-Fired Kentucky tobaccos.
Flavor Profile: It is cased with maple sugar, giving it a sweet and slightly spicy flavor.
Experience: Known for a more refined smoking experience, it offers a balance of sweetness and strength.

Mac Baren Stockton Roll Cake
Composition: Similar to Dark Twist, it includes Virginias and Dark-Fired Kentucky but is noted for having less casing or topping.
Flavor Profile: Stockton is described as a spicier and fuller smoke compared to Dark Twist.
Experience: It is considered a "gutbuster" of a smoke, offering a robust and intense flavor.

Key Differences
Casing and Flavor: Dark Twist has a sweeter profile due to its maple sugar casing, while Stockton is spicier and less sweet.
Smoking Experience: Dark Twist is more refined, whereas Stockton provides a stronger, more intense experience.

These differences make each blend unique, catering to different preferences among pipe tobacco enthusiasts.

I do rub the coins out a bit more than Per Jensen shows but usually leave it on the 'chunky' side of rubbed out. Maybe broken up would be a better description. I will give his method a try next time.
