Anybody else notice that the price on the 1.5 lb box of luxury navy flake has gone up like $10 at P&C? It's time for me to re-stock and the price caught me by surprise.
I checked smokingpipes.com and they still have the 1.5 lb box for $47, which is what they used to cost at P&C as well.
Anybody know what's up with that? I usually do business with P&C. I know a lot of people here don't like them, but I've never had any problems with them at all. Just don't understand why one of my 2 mainstay tobaccos jumped up by almost 20% since the last box I bought about 3 or 4 months ago.
Luckily my other mainstay, OGS, is still the same price.

I think the price hikes are just part of the game now. Luckily, I cellared deep and hit my goal before August. I feel for the pipers that are just getting into the game.

P&C has routinely raised the cost of tobacco due to normal supply and demand, but more notably out of popularity. I've noticed within brands 1.75 oz tins and 8 oz tins can be anywhere from a few cents to several dollars more between blends. The more popular blends are obviously more expensive. I haven't noticed this so much with other online retailers, but its a typical business practice.
Of course a lot of the price hike has to do with people going out and buying tobacco in large quantities as if they'll never be able to buy tobacco ever again. Pipe Smokers are the ones creating the shortage currently, and contributing to the price hike. The FDA shortage and price hike won't come until late next year and into 2018.

Well I think I have enough LNF to last until next month's order. I'm gonna hold off on restocking this month and try again next month. If the P&C price is still $10 higher than the smokingpipes.com price, then P&C will be losing my LNF business I guess. I mean, if it was a couple bucks I'd stick with P&C because that's who I normally use, but a 20% difference is enough to sway me I'm afraid.

P&C has new PA taxes on pipe tobaccos to deal with this fall. So their cost of business has gone up.
I thought that only applied to tobacco they sold to PA residents. :?:
I didn't notice a hike in price on any other blends.
I don't know. Either way, I hope it comes back down or I'll have to order my LNF elsewhere.

Tinsel, here is the price change:
July 5, 2016 - PS Flakes (LBF, LTF, LNF) 1oz - $3

Aug 3, 2016 - PS Flakes 1oz - $2.25 (New Packaging)

Oct 5, 2016 - PS Flakes 1oz - $3
There was a price drop a month ago related with the new packaging. There wasn't 1.5 lb box if I remember correctly, only 1 lb box, but it was still cheaper than the old bulk packaging. P&C ran out of new packaging very fast, only few PS blends are offered in new packaging right now.
Anyway, you can apply 20% discount code and buy it for $46.08.

The 1.5 lb. box price increase went into effect just a couple of days after the October Peter Stokkebye sale started. I obviously don't know the real reason for the increase, but the three Luxury Flakes are probably the top Peter Stokkebye sellers.

LNF used to be a lot cheaper than LBF for the 1.5 pound box. The price increase now has the 2 blends equally priced so I think that was the reason for the change. The new PA tobacco tax only applies to sales to people within PA.

As we've been told time after time... pipe tobacco is about to go way up. Listening to the experts say over and over, it's about to all go way up, is why some of us have been cellar-ing (hoarding) deep and wide.

I'm not sure what the reason is exactly for this particular flake, but even at a higher price right now, it will not get cheaper.

Yeah, I don't think this one is just a self-fulfilling prophecy. I think the troubles are legit this time.

I guess I'll buy a few tubs of blends I can smoke to stash, and smoke a little less. I don't smoke a lot now. Sigh. I have some years of tins waiting in and on the racks, some jars full. The shortage I will experience first is the disappearance of new blends, the excitement and vitality of that.

I have been cellaring for several years now. I'm nowhere close to Peck, however. My thinking in the beginning was to order two tins each time I made an order, or brought from my local B&M. That was then.
When it appeared the feds were going to reach into our world, I began to cellar with more enthusiasm. I thought I was being prudent and hedging against not only increased prices, but also the disappearance of some fav blends.
I don't consider myself a hoarder, but I do understand. I have seen prices go from a few bucks to outrageous on some blends.
The feds need to be reeled in. I'm still hopeful Congress will wake up and see that not only is a way of life changing, but also the economy is going to take a big hit if the regs are fully applied.
