A few weeks back I opened a tin of Dark Star generously gifted to me by Bob (Rmbittner). I let it sit for aalmost three weeks while I finished my tin of ODF. Today I was looking for something different to smoke and decided it was time to try it. I was a little nervous it would be a hassle getting it lit and keeping it lit due to many reviews I've read. Well I had no issues. I let it dry for only about 20 minutes. I took one flake folded it three times and then took some of the smaller pieces from the tin and pinched them into cubes. I twisted the plug into the bowl lightly pressed down and topped it with the cubes. It lot up perfectly and after the char light I was able to keep it lit pretty well with only a couple relighys throughout the bowl. I loaded it in my little lovat.
All I can say is it was an awesome smoke. Sweet, spicy (herbal), a absolutely the coolest smoking VA I have encountered. The texture of the smoke reminded me of a good cavendish, creamy may be the proper word. The smoke also had a little tang too it. It's been quite awhile since I smoked something and all I want is to smoke another bowl or five. This will definitely be a cellar stocker for me. If the rest of the personal reserve series is this good I will be a very happy puffer. I'll let you know what else I find in this blend as I smoke through it, most likely in record time :)

I have a 100g tin of St. James Woods aging. The Dark Star was tinned '06 IIRC, so it had a good amount of age on it and smells amazing in the tin. I'd like to try the Blackwoods too as I've heard great things. I say pop it Roth and enjoy!

Well, TJ, you just answered my question, which was how old the tin was that you were smoking from. For me, Dark Star comes around at about the 5 year mark, any more age than that is a bonus, any less, and it can be finicky. As others have said, all the Brown labels are terrific blends - buy what you can and forget about them for a few years, it's a worthwhile endeavor.
I'm glad you are enjoying the one you have.

Thanks linkdead and Andrew! I followed the same packing today, but let it dry closer to an hour. Loaded it up in my Tsuge Mizki Dublin. I have never tasted a VA so sweet and up to this point I've enjoyed VA's but never understood the sweetness. After it settled down it was like having a hard candy, think Werthers Caramel, in my cheek. The lightest draw produced so much flavor and everyone on awhile I'd take a long draw and get a really nice sour kind of flavor but not like a lemon more like sweet lemonade. The flavor profile is actually very similar to Stonehaven. It's rich, dark, and there is a berry flavor present in both. French inhaling is amazing just absolutely smooth tobacco. Also the tin note is exactly what the finish tastes like and it lingers pleasantly on the tongue for awhile after finishing the bowl. I'm also really loving the fact that there is not even a hint of bite or burn, granted I was smoking very slow but even with relights it never grabs the tongue. Two bowls in and I can easily see this being my desert island smoke.
