I just started experimenting with mylar bags this weekend because having 60+ mason jars and that many 1-2oz ounce samples in zip-tops was causing me anxiety lol. It's a game changer so far, the size I got hold 2oz perfectly so in theory I can just rip one open and smoke instead of having to crack open a large mason jar with 8oz in it and then re-jar all of it.
I thought about buying a vacuum sealer, but I didn't want to invest too much in something that might not work so I just used two pieces of wood tapped to my bench vise jaws to make a larger pressing area and used an old hair straightener my wife loaned me to seal them. By sealing it while it's being pressed, they came out just as good as a vacuum sealer would have done while still keeping a little ambient atmosphere in there. A vacuum sealer would definitely be faster though.
Barring some unforeseen downside, I will probably keep the vast majority of my bulk and opened tobacco in mylar from here on out. I'm tempted to get larger bags for the bulk stuff I buy in pounds, but with a little more labor on the front end I figure I could have everything in 2oz bags, open one and dump it in a jar and not worry about having to break down larger quantities down the line. It was only like $10 for 100 7-layer black bags so if you're thinking about trying it, then try it!
I'm open to any feedback and would love to hear some opinions or methods from some of you veteran mylar users!
