Along the same lines is the Shannara series by Terry Brooks.
Characters include druids, elves, trolls, dwarves, etc. although the story line is presented in the distant future long after a holocaust has destroyed todays civilizations.
The first book in the series, "The Sword of Shannara", was written in 1977. The most recent book in the series, "Legends of Shannara, Bearers of the Black Staff", was released about a month ago.
A bit easier reading than LOTR, but entertaining nonetheless.

I lost track of the Shannara books due to a divorce and several unwise moves! LOL!! Long story! Looks like i have some catching up to do.

you're the second person to recommend sword of truth to me today. i will have to read it. I was a fan of the wheel of time series but the author died before finishing it and i don't see the point of continuing to read it.

I first smoked my way through The Hobbit and the trilogy while in college. I did it again a couple of years ago and it still maintains it's Magic. NPR did a broadcast of a reading some time ago. It is now available on CD and is well worth the price.
