I gotta say, it depends on technique. My absolute favorite pipes are my churchwardens and semi-churchwardens. But if smoked “wrong,” I find they can be even HOTTER than a little stubby pipe. Just my experience. But every time I catch myself freight-training my churchwardens, I pay for it. Even with tobaccos I know smoke cool in my full bents.
This is good to know. I was about to ask about what role technique has with churchwardens.

I honestly never think too much about technique. I just smoke and enjoy it. But when I get tasty flow going, I have a tendency to absentmindedly go flavor chasing. Happens without my realizing it for a few minutes. Then I notice I’m smoking too aggressively and fast. Smoke is hot. Pipe is getting hot to the hand. Palate taking a beating. Sucking instead of sipping. Etc. That’ll burn you with any length pipe.

Anyway, I greatly recommend churchwardens. I don’t know why I enjoy them so much, but I find them an immensely satisfying smoking experience.

Question about Churchwardens: do they really smoke that much cooler? That would be the only ready I'd get one. Looking like Gandalf would be just a fortunate side benefit
I think the answer is yes the smoke will cool off more, and no the 5 degree temperature difference doesn't matter at all relative to just having a well behaved tobacco that you don't need to puff on to keep it lit.

Sutliff and MacBaren and others got some expensive product placement here. They've sold some tobacco and long-stemmed pipes and maybe some beer.

Good to know. Maybe I'll try it. I am getting into Peterson system pipes for the cooler temps
dog_park_piper, which Peterson are u using? I am using the System Standard 302, I compare it with my the other briar wood pipe, Peterson system really smoke cooler. The air is cooler, the bowl is cooler. I was just smoking normal, like my usual pace. I even tried to smoke more aggressive on my Peterson, it really has the difference. I'm thinking, what could cause the cooler temps? Thicker wall? More curve stem? ???

Right now I am fixated on the 312.

I just smoked a whole bowl of MacBaren Virginia no. 1 and it delivered a smoke that was far cooler and dryer than my other pipes. I had all this MacBaren Vir. no 1 and I didn't know what to do with it until now because it had always burned my mouth beyond I would ever want to experience for the sake of some nicotine.

I'm tempted to grab a Peterson B42 but my 312 is mighty big as it is.

Make sure to search out and read the horror stories about buying macqueen pipes before you jump in.
Yeah, if you order a pipe that is not in stock, it could take a while to get it. I read where some people waited up to 3 months, but if you order one that is in stock, you should get it fairly quickly.
I ordered one that was in stock and got it in a week.

I have recently acquired 2 churchwardens and in my opinion, both smoke slightly cooler than I would have expected with the same bowl and a shorter stem. For me, the answer is yes, but I don't know how much % or degree difference.

The auenland pipes sold to the public also have this exaggerated bend. It gives it a certain style, but I’ve found the stem gets in the way of a book in the lap, making these churchwardens poor reading pipes.

I’ve since gotten a straighter stem churchwarden to serve as a reading pipe because of that.

So probably the stems were designed by prop people for the movie, rather than a pipe smoker. I still like the pipe, mind you.
The 2 churchwardens I purchased were specifically with the greater bend in them. I have found that when holding it in my hand I can minimize the elbow / arm motion needed to get the stem to my mouth. Lazier = easier = more relaxed and fun with these at the moment.
