Good to know. Maybe I'll try it. I am getting into Peterson system pipes for the cooler temps
NO pipe (brand or shape) will give you a cool smoke if you huff&puff like a Choo-choo train, unfortunately.

Nor does a longer shank or stem. So no, churchwardens will NOT guarantee a cooler smoke.

Bowls with thick(er) walls may feel cooler to the touch but will still smoke hot unless you learn to sip or smoke slow.

Drying your tobacco, packing loose will help. Moist tobacco, and I include goopy, aromatic blends here, because of their difficulty staying lit, will smoke hotter - generally

Some have advised learning to smoke with a THIN bowled pipe as this will teach you to smoke with the proper cadence.

Thanks.

I've been extra drying my C&D and smoking Daughters &Ryan a lot because I really tell the difference va dry tobacco can have.

No. I do, when I smoke the system and plip. I'm not going to say things like that without having done it..
I agree. My Peterson System and the clones I have do tend to smoke dryer and cooler if all else is equal. I can get other pipes to smoke dry and cool depending on how I dry, pack and use a slow cadence.

I've always wondered who designed the pipes used in the movies. Some of them seem to have an extreme curve in the stems.
The auenland pipes sold to the public also have this exaggerated bend. It gives it a certain style, but I’ve found the stem gets in the way of a book in the lap, making these churchwardens poor reading pipes.

I’ve since gotten a straighter stem churchwarden to serve as a reading pipe because of that.

So probably the stems were designed by prop people for the movie, rather than a pipe smoker. I still like the pipe, mind you.

Question about Churchwardens: do they really smoke that much cooler? That would be the only ready I'd get one. Looking like Gandalf would be just a fortunate side benefit
I gotta say, it depends on technique. My absolute favorite pipes are my churchwardens and semi-churchwardens. But if smoked “wrong,” I find they can be even HOTTER than a little stubby pipe. Just my experience. But every time I catch myself freight-training my churchwardens, I pay for it. Even with tobaccos I know smoke cool in my full bents.
