I thought I was the only person who detests "Gandalf" pipe questions. I mean really all they're interested is in having a pipe they can put next to the stack of LOR DVD's so their friends can see them.

Yes, and what really frosts my ass is when members try to help and do research for guys like this (no matter what the subject is) simply disappear and are given no thanks for their effort.
The silver lining in all this, is that one-post-wonders tend to be the exception and not the rule. For every newbie that pops by the forums and posts one thing before evaporating, I bet we get a handful or more of folks who stick around and contribute. Think about the upside of converting that one-post-wonder to a contributing member of the forums. We get more information, fresh eyes on the hobby, and someone who helps create a market for pipes and tobacco. That's one more living breathing advocate for pipe-dom.
This is why I try to greet new folks with kindness, and information that's useful. Even if the question does get asked every other week, and is readily available by searching. In the end, if they're an asshat I'll ignore them until they go away... but I have to think that threads like this just show what an open and accommodating community pipe smokers can be.

Having been with an organization where I dealt a lot with the public, I know that when you do that, you have

to expect almost anything. One time during the holidays, when a lot of strange calls come in, I was on

the phone for an hour with a guy looking for a "sublime physicist." Whoa. It took all my restraint not to

refer him to a buddy at work who actually had a Ph.D. in biophysics. I was polite, and resolved the call on

good terms, which was the right thing to do. So you want a wizard pipe, huh?

One thing I find vaguely amusing about all this is that I doubt seriously that Tolkien smoked or ever envisaged many of his characters smoking a churchwarden in the first place. I get the impression they smoked regular sized clays and briars from the books, but the movies have permanently associated "Hobbit/wizard/dwarf/ranger" with "churchwarden."

I have to admit, though, that those ARE very nice looking. Still, if I planned to actually smoke it, I'd grab a churchwarden from Stanwell, Savenelli, etc. (or a clay pipe).

FWIW I smoked one of those Vauen pipes and I wasn't impressed at all. I bet the OP regrets it.

I somehow doubt that he wanted to smoke it, but I may be wrong. I purchased a Peterson churchwarden just out of curiosity which turned out to be an utter piece of crap, aside from the fact that I found it extremely awkward and quickly sold it. So much for churchwardens, and my last Peterson pipe. But, that's just my opinion which, when all is said and done, doesn't mean crap.
