Pipe Scholars,

I recently started smoking a pipe about two months ago. I own a Savanelli (as a starter) and have only smoked aromatics to this point. I recently bought a few ounces of some English blends and don't want to mix the cake from Aros in with my Savanelli since I'm trying a Euro blend. Wondering what a good, not-too-expensive pipe for smoking English blends should/would/could be for the hot Florida weather and a new smoker like myself?
Any help is much-obliged as always. Looking forward to the responses.

You can't go wrong with Savinelli, they will smoke English blends just as well as any other blend. My first pipe was a Savinelli and it is one of my best smokers. If you give me an idea on what you want to spend, I could recommend other brands.

For an English blend and your first time smoking I would pick up a group 3 or 4 sized pot, author, apple, bulldog, or rhodesian with around a 11/16" x 1 1/4" deep tobacco chamber. Latakia blends tend to tire your palate quickly when you're new to them (and even when your not) so a wider, shallow bowl is what I recommend. You have lots of choices in the low to mid range pipe market. If it were me and given your circumstances, I would go with a Peterson 303 or 80s in whatever finish you want.

You will find smoking english blends much easier and nicer than aromatics the majority of which tend to be hot burning and lacking in good tobacco flavour. A Stanwell shape 56 is a nice small bowled pipe with an elegant long shank and would fit the bill nicely.

I wouldn't buy local corn cobs unless they have the larger sizes because you will probabley only find that they have the legend which looks more like a toy than a pipe it's so tiny. Aristocob.com is a great source of corn cob pipes, they generally smoke way better than most briars, due to a huge air opening throughout the pipe (you can find the perfect brair later when you have the money). My reccomendations if you want a medium sized pipe, get a Country Gentleman, a Diplomat, or a Kolonel (larger than the rest) if you want a large sized pipe, go for a General.
Anything larger than the general will not be easy to use, the medium pipes in corn cob sizing are a good solid medium, they are not small at all. Aristocob sells these pipes for like $8 each (you pay a little more for the larger cobs). And of course if you want a small bowel, I always recomend a clay pipe, they have style and you can color them like a more expensive Meerschaum. They smoke just as well as a corn cob, but I feel they are nicer when you get to the small pipes.

Welcome to the forum, if you have a local B&M shop near you, stop in there and talk to them about what blends they have behind the counter that you could try while you are there.
