So as the title hints I'm looking for a tobacco that I can get in bulk that is very similar to SPC Mississippi river. Since trying this blend for the first time, I don't want any of the other tobaccos I have. The problem with this is I want to be able to buy it in bulk for bulk prices. So I'm looking for recommendations on bulk blends to try so that I don't wind up in the poor house buying MR at tin prices.

Haven't found a bulk that is similar yet, but the MS River Reserve is mind blowing as well. Some of the McClelland Grand Orientals share some similarities with MS River, it that a whole other road.

Mississippi River is Seattle Pipe Clubs blend of "rich red Virginias," Orientals, Latakia, and Perique, for those who don't have the blend in mind. I'll let others take it from there, but for bulk, I'd look through the array of Cornell & Diehl bulk to see if any of that appeals to you, although some of their best have burley as a staple too.

bigtex I have a tin of the reserve in my cabinet, I'm a little worried to try it because it will likely be even more elusive as time goes on. LOL
thanks mso489 I'll take a look.

ericusrex where can it be found in the bags? I've only found it in tins. Thanks.
I just found G L Pease Quiet nights the description looks like it might be very similar. Any one have any thoughts on this one?

I'm pretty sure that it's Mclellends tobacco that's used in Mississippi River, or at least it tastes like it to me. However Mclellends bulk isn't cheap for a bulk, I'd just get the 8 ounce tins

To my taste MR and Frog Morton Cellar are very similar. Many Balkan blends that I've tried have come close in some ways to MR so I wonder if that would be a good place for you to start looking. There are several good Balkan blends available in bulk.

yeah I'm guessing the balkan blends is where I need to start because It seems that I am not a huge latakia fan so it must be the orientals that make it stand out. I bought some bulk Moonshine pipe XXX blend that is said to be blended to be very similar to Frog Morton Cellar. The XXX is OK, but is what I assume more latakia heavy, or at least what I think latakia taste like. It is more of a smokey flavor where I really don't get any of that from Mississippi river.

That's because Mississippi River is nothing like a classic Balkan blend, I just get a bit of sourness from the Orientals, the latakia is barely noticeable. What I notice the most from MR is stoved red Virginia and perique.

C&D makes a bulk, Super Balkan, that might be worth a try. There is a world of Va/Pers, if that turns out to be a closer match that you like.

I have Golden Slice, and H&H Anniversary Kake and get completely different smoking experiences from the MR, maybe the key is the stoved Red Virginia. Just put in an order for a tin of McClellands 221-B Arcadia to give a try. What appears to be the answer is to quit waisting money on other blends and just buy a pallet of Mississippi River and be done with it, but that's a little boring LOL.

Gordon Pym has much heavier Latakia than MR. I can hardly pick up on the Lat in MR but maybe it's just my tin as I've heard there were some batch inconsistencies for some time. Don't know how true any of that is but I know that Plum Pudding has changed significantly compared to the Plum Pudding they were releasing around 2010.

It's going to cost the same as Mississippi River so why not just buy MR.

No there is hardly any lat in MR. I have it from 2014 when it was being made in bulk still, but still it was I think 60$ a pound roughly which is pretty pricey for bulk. I think the inconsistencies mainly was the cakes being broken up and people getting bags of shake and not cake. I haven't tried the atlas blended version but I can't see it being as good as the original blender.

I would just find another bulk blend to smoke and keep buying MR, you aren't going to find a similar enough blend imo. Maybe some kind of Vaper with oriental and a bit of latakia, but I don't know of any bulks that offer this.

yeah just ordered three tins. that will bring me up to about a pound of MR in tins that should last me quite a while given I have about 5 other open tins of various other things.
