Hey guys,
I've seen several different foldable pipe holders like the one in the URL.
http://www.dhgate.com/store/product/3-quot-stainless-steel-folding-pipe-stand/171460613.html
but I'd like to get a metal one that is of extremely high quality!
Can someone point me to a really good one?
Thanks!
Todd

I'm not sure why you want extremely high quality? If you want to drop a lot of money, look for a dunhill something or another holder that is gold plated. It just holds your pipes. What does "extremely high quality" mean, or what is your definition of it. If you want one that doesn't fold I would understand that better.

That may not have been the best URL to depict what I'm looking for, I certainly don't need 500 of them. and I don't need it to be gold plated, maybe not the Maserati of pipe stands, but an Audi, Mercedes, or BMW quality will do.

Will this do the job?

It's metal and it's $9...a lot less than an average BMW.

I personally use these, which I make myself for about $1. A strip of leather glued together. You can get belt blanks or use an old leather belt. They don't conduct heat so you can put a warm or even hot pipe on them and they are nice and soft so they can't scratch your pipes.

Maybe "try" one of the plastic cheap ones before investing too much in one of these. I've had several, and I just don't like them. You pretty much have to have the perfect pipe to stay balanced on top of it, which is precarious and topply at best. Pieces of crap if you ask me. You might as well just balance your pipe on top of a Bic Lighter, for all it's worth. You may like them, who knows. Mine have just found their way into the back of my pipe junk drawer, somewhere in the deep dark depths of uselessness.

Michael, I hadn't thought about that. I just thought (perhaps naively) that any pipe that wouldn't sit up on it's own would sit just fine in one of these folding pipe stands

Boy, I don't want to rest my pipe on something with metal edges.
Nearly/equally as portable as the metal or plastic folding chair holder, is this wooden job. Looks and works like the old Motorola Razr, but with very poor reception. The bottom is lined with a piece of genuine, imitation felt. You can find these things on eBay and Amazon.
Below I have a skinny Ropp on one and a fat Pete on another, so you see it holds a range of pipes. Then folds. I keep one by the door to the deck, another in my go bag...

Someone laid a nice chromed metal stand on me at the Chicago pipe show, but can't recall who.
Use for photography a la Dave?
Otherwise, I have little use for stands- I leave my pipes in an iron ashtray outside a lot, and clean ones are happy resting flat on a a counter. Some pipes are racked, but it's not necessary for good pipe care. I've not seen any damage to the pipes from contact with metal, though they are not dragged across it or dropped.

You could have someone forge one. Could even use Damascus or Genuine Wrought Iron. I've been meaning to do this soon, but been working on some other projects.

snowyowl, I think your right so I'll ask the question again, but, looking for a foldable wooden one, or maybe a leather one would be a good choice. It needs to be able to fit in my pipe pouch bag along with all the other stuff

One of the few times that the best solution is also the cheapest. Leather loops are flexible, super-stable, readily available, effectively indestructible, and easily transportable (unsnapped they're flat).

It's probably just my narrow mind, but I don't understand why after all these years the vast majority of pipes aren't sitters. All bar one of my pipes are self supporting, or just need the bit resting on a matchbox to keep it off the surface.
There are lots of pipes I really like the look of, but I won't buy them if they're going to topple over when I put it down. I outright refuse to buy pipe rests too.
Pipe rests are like having to put chocks under the wheel or your car because the manufacturer couldn't be bothered to fit a parking brake.

Because different people have different preferences for style and aesthetics?

aimlesswanderer, I agree with you wholeheartedly! but only up to the point of not buying any pipe that won't sit.
To me it's a major nuisance for a pipe not to sit! but there are so many pipes I'd have to pass on if they wouldn't sit. So that was the motivation behind my inquisitive initiating the thread (that and I enjoy having/using high quality instruments in whatever I do).
In the end I think I will go with the leather loop. it's simple, and enables me to get those beautiful pipes that won't sit, a new home :)
Thanks for your thoughts in this,
Todd
