Right on... honestly, I'm gettin by! I think the biggest thing I have to sift through is the major "taste" differences between Virginia, Burley, and Oriental (and the subcategories of each of them). I've identified things I like a lot and ones I could pass on... the problem is that almost everything is a blend so it just get confusing for me.

Outside of that, understanding that a lot of older folks don't want to deal with new people is a little different. It often seems like folks don't want to be bothered with "stupid" questions or even bothered asking unsolicited questions... almost all hobbies are the same however this one a bit different in terms of the chase of more rare or harder to obtain items.

Anyway, just some observations from a guy whos newer (6-7 moths ) to the hobby.
One of the things you can do to start understanding what you're tasting in a blend is to pick up some blending components and smoke them. Look for a semblance of that component flavor in the blend you're smoking. Then try mixing a couple of components together, like some Virginia, some Burley and some Perique, of Latakia and taste how they interact. It's very interesting to experience.
