A while ago I was checking out the site and came across a thread where there was an offer for veteran smokers to mentor newer pipe smokers. Not sure where that went?

Does anyone recall that thread by chance. If so can you link me with it!

Thx much

I'm curious as to what the responsibilities of a "pipe" mentor might be? It's not like there is anything arcane about the vice. Pretty easy stuff. Well, at least it used to be until the advent of the internet.
I think the thread was on the old PSF. It was geared toward a "mentor" helping a new smoker try different tobacco and guiding them based on what they liked etc... anyway, it was a cool idea that would allow new smokers to not need to get to far down a rabbit hole of just buying and wasting money on things they didnt need or like.

Thats all.

I remember a thread wherein a fairly newer smoker suggested it but the thread died quickly. If you need advice start your own thread and just ask in general discussion then ignore the sarcasm and bs, The following thread however benefits most people who read it ...

Right on... honestly, I'm gettin by! I think the biggest thing I have to sift through is the major "taste" differences between Virginia, Burley, and Oriental (and the subcategories of each of them). I've identified things I like a lot and ones I could pass on... the problem is that almost everything is a blend so it just get confusing for me.

Outside of that, understanding that a lot of older folks don't want to deal with new people is a little different. It often seems like folks don't want to be bothered with "stupid" questions or even bothered asking unsolicited questions... almost all hobbies are the same however this one a bit different in terms of the chase of more rare or harder to obtain items.

Anyway, just some observations from a guy whos newer (6-7 moths ) to the hobby.

No teaching those. That just comes from experience.

I've found everyone here helpful and funny. As for sorting out blends I use the tobaccoreviews site to list tobaccos with ingredients I like then try them. You can also search types of tobaccos in the search bar above and usually find a prior discussion on it. Hope that helps.

What, you mean you don't want to spend thousands of dollars accumulating a cellar of 100+ blends only to find that you don't like most of them, have an intolerance to a certain type of tobacco that makes half of them not work with your mouth chemistry, and in the end only end up really liking and keeping half a dozen of them? That's just how the hobby works! :ROFLMAO:

In all seriousness though, there really is no substitute for time and experience when it comes to pipe smoking and since everyone's tastes are different it's largely a "learn by doing" sort of endeavor. You try some Burley blends, you try some pure Virginias, try some English blends, VaPers, aromatics, a Lakeland or two, a few dark fired blends, and figure out what tastes good to you and what you personally enjoy.

It is a time consuming process, and you may find that you have more failures than successes, but along the way you'll learn to smoke slow enough that you don't get tongue bite and keep your pipe smoking cool and dry, and by the time you've smoked enough to get the mechanics all down after a year or two you'll probably have a pretty solid idea of what you like and don't like in a tobacco blend.puffy

Back when I was your age, we were handed a pipe and some GH Twist as we left our first day of kindergarten and told not to come back until we stopped vomiting.

It's funny but it wasn't until I finally tried GH Brown Bogie Twist in my third year of pipe smoking that I actually found a non-aromatic blend I really loved and resonated with me. Never did vomit either, but then again it's been a good long while since I was a kindergartner! 😅
