Beacon Extra is my favorite VaPer -- now that McClelland is no longer available I need to find a substitute. I picked up a couple of tins of Beacon Extra during the IPSD stampede, but not enough to last me until the end of days.
I'm looking for something strong with the McClelland sweetness. Any suggestions?

Watch City Cigar's Old Dominion has a nice, sweet edge. You might investigate crumble cake styles because they are often held together by something sweet, like honey or treacle.
btw, some VaPers containing cavendish may generate the sweetness you're looking for.

PS/LBF comes to mind; and almost everyone finds a sweetness in Mac Baren HH Acadian Perique, which may have the strength you're looking for. Chenet's Cake almost certainly has the strength and depth of Perique flavor, but it may not be as sweet as anything McClelland had.

I would suggest London Flake by Peretti but that seems to have disappeared from their shelves. Some say it is McClelland #2015 under a different name, others say not so but still likely made by McClelland, either way it is very similar to #2015 and if you manage to get hold of some London Flake I'm sure you'll enjoy it. Very sweet and fruity with a hint of tart is how I found it.
Regards,
Jay.

Annie Cake doesn't have the strength
I guess I'm looking for sweetness more than strength. I enjoy Scottish Cake and Escudo, but these two are not very sweet.
When I want something sweet I smoke Beacon Extra or Prairie Wind. I believe Prairie Wind was made with 5100, so now both these blends are gone.

I think you mean sweet and fruity.
I am sure you have some 40ths, I know its blasphemy but rub it out add pinch of some spicey and pinch of fruity perique. 10% ratio good starting point. Press as best as you can in small jar and wait 90days.
Dunbar is good stuff...

2nd the Dunbar. It's not the same as Beacon, but it does have some similar characteristics.
Also think that Jack Knife Plug may float your boat. It does have a nice brown bread sweetness that's awesome.

I love Dunbar, but it's also in the unobtainium department unless you're either very lucky or very diligent about finding it. Dunbar has an apricot topping.
You can do the same with Beacon Extra because it's still out in the wild. I just made a phone call and bought a pound of 2015. The stuff is out in the wild. Search and ye shall find.

This one is a little different than some of the blends mentioned above but I greatly enjoy SPC Deception Pass. It's definitely worth trying a tin. I have some aging right now but will be popping a tin soon. Delicious stuff.

I ended up with 4 bags of Dunbar I don't want through some larger purchases. I think it is very good but I don't like the thin ribbon cut.

Very, very tasty blend but for me at least, the VA and Orientals are more forward than the Perique. I smoke this several times per week.
I would think the McConnell Scottish Cake would fit the bill. I also agree with Harris now that I've tried the Curley Block several more times after getting over the cold. Very nice sweet flavor. I like the Bullseye flake loading the entire flake. Takes 2 flakes for a bigger bowl and you get some hits of sweet flavor when you reach the black cavendish bullseye.

I agree with Harris on the Solani 633. I get a nice honey sweetness from that one with rich, bready notes. It’s a winner in my book. HU’s Old Fredders might be right up your alley too. It’s a pretty unique VaPer than what you usually see in the US market but it has a very pleasant sweetness to it.

jesse, still buying pounds I see. Sure, act all like your cellar is full in the meantime scouring the planet for more MC flakes. I know you didn't go looking, it just fell in your lap and you couldn't say no.

This already occurred to me. I'm thinking of creating my own Beacon Extra by adding Perique to some of my McClelland Virginias and perhaps to FVF. I bought some of the last remaining McClelland blending Perique for this purpose.
But just in case I create something horrid, this thread is my Plan B (to try something that is actually smokable).

They always have bulk Dunbar at my local B&M. They actually had some tins of the stuff...which I ignored until they sold out after a couple of weeks.
I did try the bulk once, but it tasted very, very mild.
I agree with Harris on the Solani 633.
I opened a tin of fresh 633 a couple of months ago. It was good, but not as sweet as Beacon Extra. I put the rest in a jar to try again after a year or so. I'll have another go at it soon.
