looking at the ember

I hope everyone is not getting sick of all my questions but here is another. When you are smoking your pipe and looking at the hot ember should it be just a small spot of flame here and there as you smoke or should it be the hole bowl like when you first light up I am still tring to master the packing and lighting I just want to be the best damn pipe smoker I can be and get the most enjoymet possible.

It depends on why you are smoking.
I know that sounds a bit off base, but it's the truth.

If you are in a smoking competition, a small carefully controlled ember is what you want.

But, if you are smoking that pipe with a pint at your elbow, sitting in your favorite chair, a roaring fire going, and your feet on the fender..... It can't be big enough.
It's all a matter or preference.

It's totally up to you.
There is no right or wrong answer.

I wanna know if he's tamping his ash how can he see embers? so I'd say no.. you shouldn't see nothing but the smoke plume as you fantasize about ... well you get the idea.

Just puff a bit while tamping and you'll get the ember nicely spread out.
