Does anyone have any information about this pipe and advice about replacing the stem? This pipe is unsmoked and I want to change that. The pipe is at least 50 years old.

Nice variation on a Tyrolean style pipe. the Bruyere Garantie, as far as I can tell is just like the US stamp of Genuine Briar and really doesn't tell you who made it. As for the stem, I'd email Norwood's a picture and see what he says.

The stems on the old Danish styles were normally horn, but I would imagine that someone could fabricate a vulcanite or lucite one for you. I actually just brought home two very cool old Danish style pipes with huge meer bowls and am probably going to have to fabricate some of the parts either out of briar or vulcanite. I would ask Norwoods as Capt. said and see what options they have for you. I have a very similar pipe, but mine is smoked, haven't ever smoked it, just looks cool.

I think the Bruyere Garantie pipes were made in France. Have you checked pipephil ?

I have one that I got 50 years ago ... don't remember where I got it, but I've always thought it was a great conversation piece ... mine doesn't say Bruere Garantie, but it is similar in general appearance and it does have a stamp on it which says it was made in Yugoslavia ... I tried smoking it back in college days, but it did't draw at all well (air leaks both at the top and bottom of the stem) so it's remained a bookshelf ornament ever since.

I can't answer any of the questions but had to comment.
That piece has character, lots of it! I'd keep the bit and get used to it. The pipe was made to sit in the hand, not to be clenched between the teeth. A stem change? I . . . don't know.
However, it's your pipe, Enjoy! I hope it smokes as good as it looks.

I have one similar that my sister got me in Germany or Austria (can't remember). It was new, however. Mine smokes surprisingly well. It's a VERY large bowl. I don't think I've finished, but it would probably last me a couple hours. My sister said it was called a Grandfather Pipe.

Thank you for the advice. I wouldn't touch a thing if it was smokable, but I think she would like to be ready for service and not a mantle queen. I will definitely save the original stem. Good idea. Thanks.
