Thanks for the inspiration, Betty! I just finished a set of my own! Pleasure to go without spillage! There is a business opportunity, right there ...

I used a small wood screw to attach the aluminum tube part of Brigham filters to the cork, to use as a handle.
Oh, and I used wine corks instead of hardwood, because they are "squishy" and thus will expand and contract with the warm briar - so I don't risk cracking the pipe.
I also carbonized the undersides with the same stuff that is used to coat pipe bowls, to make them "burn resistant", just in case the tobacco is not fully out when I cork it :)

So, I've been using them all day and experimented a bit, and it seems I accidentally made 2 pipe corks that are 22mm, one at 21mm and one at 20mm, so they even fit different pipes than the ones I made them for (pictured above). Couldn't be happier! I've got everything "covered" (pun intended!) except my group 3 and group 6 sizes.
I'll fill a pipe tonight with MB Golden Extra and cork it, and see if it still "fresh" tomorrow morning. If the cork prevents drying out of a ready packed pipe, I'll be in Pipe Smoker's Heaven!

I wasn't getting why someone would do this until the last post. So the idea is that you fill a bowl, start smoking it, but not finish so you cork er up, and in the AM, take off the cork and its "as if" you have a fresh bowl? I happen to have this problem quite often and I light up in the AM. Hummmm [scratches chin].....

Nice cap.
Z it also keeps the ash and tobacco from falling out into your pocket

I think all of the above is an awesome idea.
I know I'd be the guy that breaks off the tip and has to use a corkscrew to get his pipe open again....

Exactly what I did with a bowl of MB Golden Extra. Picked it up this morning and I could continue where I left of. The other use cases would be to readily pack a pipe in the morning, stash it away for later in the day, or when taking a pipe to town/party/... pack it, cork it, put it in jacket and off ya go, without the need to carry a tobacco pouch, or finding your pockets full of crap and the pipe empty.

I'm gonna try and use some old bourbon corks for that! thx for the idea. I have a single pipe bag, but I still hate getting ash stuck in it
