It looks to have a weird opening mechanism on it. Kinda like a pull tab but not.
This used to be fairly common on large tins. The tab was free to move around the rim of the lid. You would pull up on the tab, which would act as a lever to pry up that part of the lid. Then you could slide the tab part way around and repeat until the lid popped off. It worked great and you didn't have to scrounge around for something to open the can.

kcvet67, is correct. That's the way the 1 lb cans from Lane Ltd, and many others, were produced. I'm guessing that can of Highland is from around 1980. I know I bought it at the Lane store on 42nd St in NYC; across from Grand Central Station.

The tobacco inside needs to be re-hydrated but reminds me of something akin to "And So To Bed".

I'll also take a shot of the Harcourt from the top to show the carving. It is interseting.

Having a fun day for sure although no hidden cash as yet.

I absolutely love the two by your Highland tin. They seem to have Preben Holm,Denmark written all over them in my eyes.
