Not the best of his tragedies.

Not the worst either. I saw an incredible production at the OSF in the 1970s and it made an indelible impression. Over the years I’ve seen upwards of a hundred performances, and not infrequently plays I’d read and been relatively unimpressed by came to life on the stage in ways that astonished me. Just a reminder of the obvious; these were originally meant to be seen and heard, not read, and a talented director and cast makes all the difference. Like most aficionados I’ve seen minor plays that blew me away and Hamlets that left me surreptitiously glancing at my watch.

Books about Shakespeare, good, bad and indifferent, would fill a warehouse. I used to have a decent library on the subject but gave most of it away. Personal favorites, like Schoenbaum’s Shakespeare’s Lives and some of EK Chambers’ work, I kept.

Teaching Shakespeare is a fine career for the soul, in my opinion. My late wife (I'm remarried) taught English at a small women's college and read some plays almost every year; I did admire it. I was a faculty spouse for about 23 years, and always felt highly supportive and involved. Shakespeare died at age 52, and so did my wife, alas. Now I'm with a second amazing woman. Welcome aboard.

Hi all.

I have lurked in these pages a hundred times from google searches when looking things up, so I finally registered here. << Snipped bits out >>
Welcome!

Please put your location in your Profile as people are forgetful.
Why:
That will save questions in the future as to where you live when you later mention local stores, weather, tobacco prices, availability, regulations, location of photos, wildfires, air quality, etc. In many instances that saves time for those who read your posts.
How:
Under your avatar, (top right, left most of three symbols) you choose "Account Details", which brings up "My Account". "My Location" is halfway down. Whatever you're comfortable with- town, city, county, state. Just country if you must.

Now I smoke just about every day. It relaxes me like nothing else.

Welcome from fabulous Las Vegas, Nevada!

I concur. A highly underrated form of uniquely intense relaxation. I was reading the Wikipedia entry on the history of tobacco recently, and was struck that at no point did they mention the relaxing effects of tobacco. No media ever seems to mention the incredibly obvious (to smokers) fact that it is wonderfully relaxing.

Hi all.

I have lurked in these pages a hundred times from google searches when looking things up, so I finally registered here. I usually only post to a pipe group on Facebook, but they don't always have all the answers about provenance of old pipes.

Anyway, I first started smoking a pipe in 1997 when I was 18. First pipe was a Brebbia Avanti bent billiard which I still have. I only smoked on and off for a year or two, then stopped for about 20 years. I came back about 2.5 years ago. I'm now a middle aged college professor who teaches Shakespeare for a living, and it just seemed to make so much more sense for me to be smoking that pipe at my age now. It was like putting on an old glove, though. Now I smoke just about every day. It relaxes me like nothing else.
Welcome from the Center Of The Known Universe

One of my top 5 pipes is a Brebbia Avanti. There isn't a pipe made by anyone that I would trade for it.
