For a short period of time, as in weeks or a month or two, sure, though you will probably notice the tobacco dry out a bit and, if it's an aromatic, lose some added flavor. You might actually find this desirable. Longer term, just put it in a proper canning jar and then you don't have to worry. Tins are intended to be opened and smoked through in fairly short order.
It also depends on environmental factors such as relative humidity. The drier the air is where the tin is stored, the faster the tobacco will dry out.

I have a draw full of sealed tobacco tins, my 'cellar' so to speak. I'd say there are about 100 to 150 tins in there. The vast majority are round tins, none of them opened. Yet they collectively give off an aroma. What the H is going on there? Any professors of quantum physics know what's going? Is the aroma leaking through the tins, or are the seals faulty?
I don't think I've ever gotten a tin that didn't give off at least a little bit of a smell. Put them in a closed container and it can get pretty strong, kind of like the homogenized scent of a bag of mixed Halloween candy.
I've always wondered if, were they left long enough, would the contents absorb the flavor and scents given off by the other tins? So far I haven't noticed that happen, but I keep anything with latakia in a separate container.

Are you claiming that you have never had/owned a properly sealed tin of tobacco?

I have about ten unopened tins of Peterson English blends in a small tote. It smells like Latakia when I open the tote.

The correct answer here is:
d. All the above

All of the above experiences are valid and are an example of what may happen with any given tin at any point in time. The only variable not mentioned is ambient temperature and humidity. Given sufficient ambient humidity, an open tin of tobacco will never dry out. In high ambient temperatures and low humidity, a tin could completely dry out quite quickly.

My answer to those who wish to be overly cautious is to seal the tin (opened or unopened) in Mylar. I have some opened tins in small Mylar ziploc bags that have lost little to no moisture in ten years. I also have some that have dried out completely, due to a faulty zip seal.

Heat seal tins in a good quality Mylar bag, or transfer the contents to a Ball jar. Or store the tins in a heat and humidity controlled environment. Those are the only way to ensure that tobacco retains an adequate moisture level.

Next question: WTF is an adequate moisture level?

This thread makes me nervous. I've got about 200+ sealed 50 gram tins that I'm keeping for when tobacco prices go sky high. Hope they will still be good when and if I need them. puffy

I have many unopened tins I've stored for years. So far I've never had an issue with any that I have opened after several years of storage.

I realize there may end up being some amount of loss eventually, but I'm willing to accept that because I've also got a lot stored in jars, and I just don't want to keep accumulating jars.

Maybe I'm lazy...but I'm reasonably convinced at this point that long-term tin storage is not a problem the vast majority of the time (knock on wood).

Take any regular tin and put in a sealed container like a tupperware bin for a week, then open it and take a sniff. Chances are, you will smell tobacco. All of my tins that aren't the C&D type give off a noticeable scent.

Wow one tin? I have no idea which one it is. Smells like black cav though. I'll have a root about later and find this little stinker lol
Could be one, could be all.
I’d maybe give them a twist test (for round tins) as @Lumbridge noted if I were concerned. Square/rectangular tins I’d devote more scrutiny to.

I know it I were to do such an endeavor, I could find the leaky easily-it would be of course the most cherished, irreplaceable blend in the bunch😆

All I can say, is that your experiences are very different than mine!

I've had good luck vacuum sealing the tins. Sometimes five to a plastic bag. Have to check those as well. I've noticed some of the bags loose the seal over time.

Yup, tested the lids and found a tin of Standard Mixture had a loose cover. It is dryer than a popcorn fart 😂
I like my tobacco dry so I packed a bowl and breathed through it four times and it is smoking fine. The Latakia is muted which is fine by me. I got burnt out on Latakia a few years ago. Almost all of my tobacco is in jars and Mylar. I will heat seal the few unopened tins I have in Mylar because I don’t plan on smoking them for a while, if ever.

I have an easy fix for you.
Send them my way, and I will make sure they are properly stored. I’ll even sample them from time to time to ensure they are still properly stored.
