I am moving from Louisiana to Hawaii next summer (Military). my cellar is a 30gal tote with maybe 5-10lbs of tobacco. My last government move to Hawaii yrs ago took two months from when my house hold goods were picked up to when they were dropped to my new house. How do I go about getting it out there safely, without shocking with heat/humidity too much? Boxing it up and just shipping it ups? Thanks in advance.

Is it mostly tins? I moved from New York to California some years ago and I had mostly tins and one jar of Penzance. Everything was fine. Today I am smoking the stuff and all seals good and contents fine.

I was moved by professional movers. It took about 3-4 weeks for the truck to make its way across country.

I packed the tins in groups of 5-packs wrapped in bubble wrap. Then placed the bubble-wrapped packs into a few cardboard boxes with plenty of padding (top, bottom, sides). I used quite a bit of bubble wrap.

I wouldn't worry much about temperature in transit. Most of my tins came all the way from Europe before I bought them.

Hope this helps.

It seems that in your situation, the only thing YOU can control is the safety of your blends. I'd put everything into mylar bags instead of jars.

Heat and humidity it seems there's really nothing you can do about it.

Id say 50/50 tins and jars. I have like 7-8 quart size jars. I’ll wrap with bubble wrap and ship it.

I'll second @didimauw myself...mylar is your friend. I have plenty of jars myself, but the prospect of a move causes me to shudder at the thought of broken glass intermingling with broken flake. So for that reason, bubble wrap is also your friend. Also, I'd opt for UPS or FedEx. I have limited first hand knowledge of how intact their shipments arrive, but I have plenty of it with USPS, and I don't think it's possible for them to do a worst job than that.

Good luck! 👍

Yeah, I agree. No way around it. Package it up the best I can and Ill have it shipped to me when I get there. Probably the best way. Thanks!

I’ve had the movers moved my tobacco during PCS. I bubblewrapped everything real good. These days I would transfer to mylar and keep tins as is.

The weather shock is overbloated. I’ve had tobacco stored in a 100+ degree garage all year. No issues. And after this year it will be -40 in the garage so i’ll let you know how that goes.

Your tobacco will be in a shipping container so the temp swing won’t be too much. It’ll be hot, but it wont affect anything.
