I like to put out some of what I plan to smoke first thing in the morning in a wooden bowl to dry overnight. I like to spread the tobacco out so it all can dry. To me, dry tobacco smokes smoother, tastier and with no bite if dried. It has always amused me that some will worry about dry tobacco and rehydrate so that they can dry it.

Preloading is my preferred method, if I think about it ahead of time. In my experience, the pipe is more likely to be ghosted by this.

When I first got into pipes a friend told me that he would take is aromatic tobacco and put some on a plate either the night before, or in the morning to let it dry, and then enjoy a late afternoon or evening pipe. He said the tobacco would have ample time to dry and provide a better smoke. I tried it with some goopy aromatics, and it works. It made the tobacco more enjoyable and cut down on the re-lights. I don't do it much anymore because the few aromatics I smoke now aren't terribly wet, so they don't need as much dry time. I will still do it sometimes if I plan on smoking certain flakes or if I'm smoking one of my rope tobacco's.

That’s the Delayed Gratification. Yes it’s a real thing. I had to read about it and try it.

I'm primarily a Virginia smoker and as the article says this works great with Virginia blends. I haven't done it with English blends yet so can't say there but I'll get to it.

I actually enjoy doing this with burley blends. To me, really brings out the flavor of a burley blend.

I always pack and char-light an “after work” pipe before going in, mostly because after work I just want to get home and don’t want to take time preparing, loading, and char-lighting before hitting the road. I don’t know if an eight hour rest makes any difference to the smoke, but it sure saves time!
Yeah I do a chat light as well when I get the notion to prep a pipe for the following day. I don’t fo this nearly enough tho

Out of curiosity, when you say char, how long to you char/puff it for? I’ve experimented with the amount of time charing but don’t know if there is a happy medium or sweet spot
I just light it enough to cover the very top of the bowl. I don’t draw down into the bowl. I put the flame above the bowl and draw down so the flame just touches the top layer of tobacco, set the tamper on top and give it a little spin to spread the ash evenly and I’m done. Now it’s ready to go when I’m ready to smoke.

Was curious. I usually smoke mine a bit more before putting them down.
Maybe smoke mine 1/5th of a bowl. And come back to them later.
