This was mentioned in a recent thread (can't remember which one), so I thought I'd give it a go just for the sake of experimentation. I loaded my pipe yesterday about 4pm for a smoke today noonish. I can't claim any cause/effect relationship, but it was a nice smoke that lasted longer than my usual and the taste didn't go "off" till closer to the bottom of the bowl. I usually scrape out the last 1/4 because it's either a bit wet and sizzles on relight, the taste goes off, or more common, a combination of the two.

Here
I've been loading the night week before with GH flakes.

Fixed that for ya... nnnn

When I first began and didn't have much aged tobacco lying around, I found loading a day or three in advance a useful tool.

Since then, I've learned that I like REALLY dry, non-aromatics almost exclusively and I have enough old tobacco lying around that there's always something "just right" and ready to go.

Opened (unsealed, not "topless") tins for months and years work just fine for me. Unless you live in a desert, give it a try.

If a tin does get dryer than I like, I dunk both ends of a q-tip in water and lay it inside the tin on top of the wrapper. It gently brings the humidity back up.

I always see the posts here, and other places, asking how to rehydrate tobacco. I always ask them if they have tried to smoke it. Usually they say no. Many have replied that the dry tobacco tastes and burns great!
Crispy dust dry maybe not, but very dry is usually fine. The tobacco usually gets more moist after a few puffs. I recently posted here that I was smoking DUST dry GLP Abingdon.....it was glorious. Same as normal really. I still have a few bowls to look forward to. :)

I have a large bowl full of pre loaded pipes for mailbox trips, yard work etc etc. I load the same blends in the same pipe each time. I then pop on a wind cap and stuff a cleaner down the stem and toss them in the bowl. Whatever I’m in the mood for I grab the particular pipe and light it up. Some dry for a day and others for a week. Regardless all smoke fine.

I always pack and char-light an “after work” pipe before going in, mostly because after work I just want to get home and don’t want to take time preparing, loading, and char-lighting before hitting the road. I don’t know if an eight hour rest makes any difference to the smoke, but it sure saves time!

I’ve never intentionally done this. I do open up tins and let them ‘decant’ for at least a week or so before lighting up, but I suppose that’s a different thing altogether. My days are somewhat unpredictable with 2 kids aged 5 and under so knowing how many pipes I’ll smoke the next day is an impossible task.

Out of curiosity, when you say char, how long to you char/puff it for? I’ve experimented with the amount of time charing but don’t know if there is a happy medium or sweet spot
