I thought this would be a fun experiment to see what lads and lasses on here like to smoke. Let's make a list of tobacco types that we like going from favorite to least favorite. I'll go first:
1.Latakia/Burley
I like both equally well for different reasons, and cant put one above the other. I like the smoky flavor of Latakia and like its cool burning properties, and I like Burley because of the nutty/chocolate flavor and because it is also cool burning.
2. Aromatics
They are often a mellow smoke, and the good ones can burn very dry when given enough dry time. Also, I like to smell my tobacco while I smoke it, so aros are always a go to.
3. Perique
Cool burn and a unique flavor, I like Perique heavy blends on occasion, but the flavor can also get old kind of quickly, so I don't smoke them as much as some others. Still a nice treat every once in a while.
4. Virginias
I love the taste of a good Virginia, but even with proper packing and slow smoking, I have a hard time finding VAs that dont burn my tongue, so I reach for these less often. Still, when I find one I do like, it stays in heavy rotation and is a nice treat.
Lets see your lists guys!

1. I love Latakia Blends. They taste good & smoke cool. These would be my first choice if I had to choose one.

2. Orientals! Great flavors, and I can smoke them any time of day.

3. VaPers are nice in the midday for a little boost.

Love to add Jewel St. James Perique to Virginias as well, to make my own.

4. Virginias in the morning for me. I avoid the tongue bite by sipping on a Churchwarden,

and keeping the tobacco as cool as possible.

5. Burley is good, but I would like a bit more flavor for the punch in the stomach it likes to deliver.

Pipe Novelist, I must not have tried the same burley that you enjoy. I've always found it to be rather flavorless. Cool burning, yes. But "chocolate"?

1. Virginias. Some are very mild, some full flavor, some sweet, some earthy. Lots of complexity and widely available. They're just good for any time of day for me.
2. Va/Per. It's nice to spice things up about every third smoke for me. The perique gives my beloved virginias an interesting friend to pal around with in my smoke.
3. Burley, particulary of the OTC blend variety. I like these in the morning. Maybe not every morning, but almost always that time of day. The dry, simple flavors of these blends never overwhelm me, not to mention i'm frequently hung over and don't want anything too strong in flavor anyhow
4. Everything else. I hate to do that to Latakia, Orientals, and whoever else i'm not thinking of. I just don't smoke these other leaves much. Every now and then i'll get a Lat/Orient craving and i'll break out some Old Dublin, but it's rare. Aros pop in every now and then. Usually if i'm on the run, or in public and just want a nice smell and not to concentrate too much on what i'm smoking.

My list is pretty much the same as yours Pipe Novelist!
Burley/Latakia - These two are tied. These are the blends I reach for the most and Mac Baren Golden Extra is at the top of my current favorites list.
Aromatics - A lot of aromatics are "meh". But Ive found that smoking them in my MacQueen churchwardens helps their flavors really come out. Even the cheap stuff. I have healthy new respect for Captain Black Royal after having smoked it in one of these. The flavor is outstanding. And like the OP, I enjoy the room-note immensely while I'm smoking.
Greek/Turkish/Oriental - I guess those three are pretty much the same thing? lol. As part of a blend they bring a cool, sweet and sometimes floral taste that I rather enjoy on occassion.
Virginias - Out of all the different tobaccos, Virginia is the only one that tastes like "cigarette" to me. While that's not necessarily a bad thing, Id rather taste other things. It also tends to burn hotter than I like even when I try to keep it just barely going and as a result it can taste very harsh. As part of a blend its much better. But as a straight blend I find myself skipping most of them. The one exception I make to this is Orlik Golden Sliced. I dont know why but Ive never had any problems with that blend and I enjoy it a lot. The others I approach cautiously.

1. Burley/Latakia. I like the rich spiciness.

2. Balkan Blends for the cool earthy flavor.

3. Virginia + Anything: interesting varieties.

4. Aromatics of all kinds. The ladies like the room note, and I like the variety. They go well with desserts, and sometimes breakfast.
5. DO NOT LIKE plain Virginias. Taste acrid to me. Yuck.
I have Plum Pudding, Townsman Maple, Black Velvet, chocolaty Goedewaagen, Shortcut to Mushrooms, Erinmore Mixture, and Tnderbox Connoiseiur in rotation this week. I still have half a tin of Frieburg and Treyer Golden mixture open, but ism planning to get some Perique to mix with it. Plum pudding is an English, for any newbies that have neve tried it.

I pretty much only smoke aromatics. Latakia/English blends still make me vommit. I tend to enjoy mostly a mix of VA, Burley, and Cavendish leaf. Very occassionally I'll throw in a bowl of FMOTB for a Perique fix, but mostly just the aros.

I rotate them all. However right now with the weather getting colder and windows closed most of the time, I try to avoid stinking the house too badly with Latakia and Virginia, so I have gravitated more toward aromatics, mostly Lane blends for Fall/Winter, with the occasional Prince Albert as the lone non aromatic for variety . I imagine I'll be more into English again in the Spring, but truthfully I smoked so much Latakia this past Summer that I burned out on it for awhile. I smoked a heavy Latakia blend a few weeks ago out on the porch on a warm Saturday, and truthfully wasn't as into it as I thought I'd be. Maybe it was just a shock to the system after a few week's absence, but I found myself wanting 1Q or BCA instead.

I like them all really, but I'm not a huge fan of burleys. I don't hate them, but I don't love them either. I will say this though, I love strong english blends

Order of preference is not really easy. But ordered by amount consumed would be:
VaBurs

Lat forward blends

Kentucky

VaPers

Aromatics - qualified: As close to an aromatic as I come, and I do love these, are the older recipe blends that use tonqiun, rose etc.

Latakia/Oriental/Virginia blends

Stoved Virginia

Red Virginia
I got over aromatics years ago, and I've never thought Burley has much flavor.
As for drugstore blends, I've pretty much tried them all and have no use for them.

Tin description of Burley London by MacBaren found here: http://www.tobaccoreviews.com/blend_detail.cfm?ALPHA=B&TID=695
Maybe it was just because this blend has the chocolate/cocoa flavoring that I picked up in the smell that made it taste like that to me. Some flavorings have a tendency to do that, at least to my taste buds. I pick up the smell and sort of taste it in the smoke afterwards. The same is true, for me at least, with any blend containing a topping of maple, rum, whiskey, or vanilla. In any case, nutty is often a good descrition, if not a little earthy as well.
Out of all the different tobaccos, Virginia is the only one that tastes like "cigarette" to me.
I can agree with this to a point, but I think it really depends on the blend and the packing and puffing method. I tried some McClelland Navy Cavendish that was rather un-spectacular, but G.L. Pease Jacknife Plug has a wonderful, hearty, rich, sweet taste that can be matched with few others that I have found. Orlik is also a great VaPer that deserves special mention, but beyond this, I have a hard time finding VAs that I really like.

1. VA/Per blends with A bit of Deer Toungue such as "Capitol Stairs" or Gentleman Caller".
2. Escudo or Bullseye
Do not like Latakia "English" type blends....To me most of those that I have tried seem to have a topping that contained bacon grease.

pipenovelist,
A ha! I see the disconnect... You were talking about a specific BLEND where I was talking about the burley leaf itself.

So far I have smoked Latakia blends an aromatics, and I like them both.
I have yet to experiment much with Burleys and Virginias.
Recommendations will be welcomed, but not taken too seriously. :puffy:
