Keep a small fire extinguisher near your couch. I have one at the end of my couch. I am not going to ad to the crotch image, but I do hope you have someone to help you with this...
If you have ever seen a mattress or couch take off burning you will be VERY careful of fire around any stuffed furniture. From the time that it finally bursts into flame until it is a roaring inferno is seconds.
Damn, you guys really ran with that one, didnt you? In all seriousness, thanks for the responses. I might have to figure out somewhere else to smoke or find a way to not get ashes and embers all over the place. Any ideas?
Of couse it is a fire hazard. Shoving any stick in your mouth that contains a slow burning ember is a fire hazard. Be mindful of what you are doing and the hazard will not demonstrate it's potential to cause harm. A sharp knife is a hazard but if you are mindful of how sharp it is while using it you will never get cut.
Update: Thanks to the information presented in this thread, I no longer smoke on my couch. I still smoke in the living room, but I have wheeled my office chair in there, and my lighter, matches, pipe tool, and ashtray all sit on a glass table.
Well guys,....the truth be known...I've had to smash out a few embers on my shirt on more than one occasion!!
(Never cough with a lit pipe in your mouth. )
