roleur, I'd stay away from torch lighters; they burn super-hot and will destroy a pipe. Hold it at the wrong angle and you will put a big ol' soft spot on the inside of a tobacco chamber.

I just use a Vector lighter I picked up a year or so ago. If that runs out and I don't have refill time I'll just grab some matches. Might get a zippo with pipe insert eventually.

I usually use my Zippo pipe lighter because I have to smoke outside on the patio under the fan and Zippos light just about anywhere. When I am not under the fan or not in the wind I use my Calibre butane lighter. Actually, the butane lighters burn hotter then either matches or lighter fluid lighters like the Zippo and are easier to light your pipe. However, the Zippo pipe lighter never fails me.

I'm a bit of a mixed camp kind of guy, but with a heavy preference for wooden kitchen matches. If I don't have matches, I use a Zippo that my grandfather owned, handed down to my father, and was given to me. Zippo was kind enough to refurbish it and put pipe insert guts into it for me, for free.
I have been known to rock a MM corncob pipe and Bic lighter while driving. Americana incarnate.

I really like the idea of matches, but for many reasons they can be just plain inconvenient.
I coughed up $11 on an IMCO pipe lighter. It has a 45 degree flame and is butane refilable... not bad.
Now i'm kinda wanting a zippo, I never knew they were wind resistant!

I prefer matches. Its definitely more of a comfort/ritual thing than a logical one...
I have used matches all over the front and back patio... and should probably sweep those up

I mainly use a Xikar Pipeline. I used to use BIC lighters as they're consistent and last me forever, until I found they use sweatshops for manufacturing their products. Too bad, but I sometimes grab another brand of regular lighters if I see them.
I would however like to start using matches more often... it just feels better, more down to earth. :puffy:

Ahh yes, good thinking, Ted. I was concerned mainly with those first few puffs of smoke being super hot and tasting bad, but of course I don't want to damage the pipe either!

Matches or Bee-Line. I like whittling the end of a spent match into a dangerously sharp point and either using it as a toothpick or a self-defense weapon.

I can't keep a match lit for the life of me. Really, if it came down to having to light my pipe with a match and death, I'd be greeting Jesus pretty quickly.
I use a Vector lighter with Xikar fuel. Xikar butane doesn't give you that nasty flavor that Zippo butane does and it comes with adapters to fill any brand of butane lighter. (It works great in Shaun's Zippo/w a butane pipe insert. I love the way his works but the roll wheel on the Zippo cuts my finger.)

i use my zippo pipe lighter for the false light and then matches to actually light it. No reason really, sometimes it will be only matches if i'm out of fluid and other times it will only the zippo if I can't find the matches.

My preferred methot is a good stick match, now that said I do have the privilege of a dedicated smoking room so I do not worry about wind or such, but I do use whatever is handy to light my pipe when a match is not readily available or weather conditions do not permit matches

Cyndi's post got me to wondering if anyone "besides me" has a callus on their thumb from the striker wheels on lighters. And, which thumb... left or right? Mine is on my right thumb.
