Right on, there! I always do my first light with a wooden match, and then, depending upon the circumstances, relight with a match, a hemp thread (usually have a candle going in my cave,) and--very commonly--a Zippo pipe lighter. I use the Black fuel--low odor, and after the first second, most of the odor burns off anyway. Maybe I'm a bit of a Philistine, but I can't taste the fuel, though there are quite a few here who say they can. I do have a collection of butane lighters, carry a Bic in my pocket, and one of these days, I may just pull the trigger on an Old Boy. Do I need it? Not in the slightest. But I may just get a case of LAD and won't be able to control myself.

Yep, I also use a Zippo pipe lighter on occasion and I can’t for the life of me detect any Naptha taste from the fuel. Then again, after close to 50 years of smoking cigarettes I’m pretty sure that most of most taste buds are petrified.

Well, I received the lighter from Piplighters.net today so here is my somewhat premature review on it. I certainly cannot compare it to an Old Boy as I’ve never handled one, much less owned one. Then again, if I did own an Old Boy there would not be any reason for my purchasing this lighter in the first place. It does not come in a box, and no instructions, but common sense, and some research, you can easily obtain information as to how to fill the lighter, and it’s upkeep.
It seems quite solid and well made and I used it to smoke my first bowl with it this evening and it performed quite flawlessly. Then again, so did my ’76 Opel GT for a few months, but that’s another story. Perhaps with good maintenance and proper care it might hold up, but only time will be the true test. I’m somewhat fastidious with some things, much to the chagrin of my daughter and granddaughter, but I’m much too old of a dog to change now and I know full well my faults and admit it (except to them ;) )
Now, if by chance anyone is contemplating in purchasing this particular lighter do NOT purchase it from Pipelighters.net! Granted, it (supposedly) has a lifetime guarantee, but this is nothing more than a Jifeng pipe lighter (it states that on the bottom of the lighter) and can be purchased much more cheaply with numerous eBay vendors. Pipelighters.net was upfront in stating that this lighter was made in China, but for some reason I assumed (silly me) that it was their own ‘personal manufacture’, as it were, of these lighters… NOT so. As I stated,, you can purchase the very same lighter on eBay, and other places, in the $30.00 +- range with FREE shipping if you bother to shop around. Anyway, for what it’s worth, I hoped this has helped in some way for those that might possibly have considered in purchasing this type of lighter from Pipelighters.net.

As a side note to timely:
I’m on various forum sites, and I also own and run one for about five years (not pipe related), so I’m well acquainted with the misunderstandings/misinterpretations that can happen all too frequently with the type written word. I have the distinct feeling that is what happened, and if so my apology. ;)
