Bold above my emphasis of patent nonsense. Please stop making categorical statements.
Sorry, let me clarify and say that was a generalization. In my experience, Zippo lighters work much better in the wind when used by me using my personal technique. I use my hand, body, structures to block the wind and advise the same. I am experienced with Bic and several lighters bought off the usual websites and found Zippo to work best for me.

I agree. Butane is expensive and unreliable. My Zippo has never let me down with zero maintenance
*Very easy, but weekly maintenance.

Zippo and Bic. Bic is a back up in case Zippo runs out of fuel. And Zippo does run out of fuel at most inopportune moment.
I highly recommend one of the $10 zippo fuel canisters on a keyring that holds 1 fill and a flint. I stopped carrying an extra bic and carry the fuel can instead, in my purse briefcase.

I stand corrected. Thanks for pointing that out. To clarify, after a couple of years I have never trimmed or replaced a wick or flint. I do have to refill it more often than a prefilled butane lighter.

Great suggestion of the canister, I was not aware that they sold these.

Best thing I've done to improve butane lighter performance is to switch to the high performance butane fuel. I use Xikar's. For the OP, bleed completely to get rid of any air. Blow off flame nozzle with compressed air. Light with another lighter and let burn for 30 seconds or more. Do this a couple of times.

If none of that works, toss it in the trash can.
This is almost exactly what I do too. The only tip I'd add is that I also adjust the flame valve all the way down when refilling. Doing that should keep the amount of air that comes in while filling to a minimum.

Bic will not light in any wind, and I have had to flick it until my finger blistered some times. I can see the fluid in the plastic, shake like hell, get a small flame that goes out before I can get it to my pipe, and back to flicking with a finger because my thumb is sore. Fill your Zippo weekly, and no worries. Just saying….
I do not know if this may be helpful for you….. also I want to add that I also prefer using my Zippo….. but there are two tricks that may help when you are using a Bic that I have found… that helps keep them working when they seem to have gone off the rail and produce a puny flame:

1. You say you can see fluid. Be sure that the fluid is in the chamber under the flame vent. Bic’s have two chambers (I guess to keep fluid high enough in the siphoning chamber). If you have some fluid, tilt the Bic ~90 degrees with the flame vent side on the bottom. This will drain all the fluid into that chamber. This helps me when the Bic is starting to get lower in fuel.

2. If you are getting a puny flame, I have found it is sometimes gunk in the metal area around the flame vent. I have had pretty good luck getting a normal flame back if I blow rather forcefully onto that metal chamber area. Seems to clear out “gunk”.

Cannot guarantee the above will work, but both are worth a shot when you are really wanting to light your pipe and all you have is a Bic….. and the damn thing is being stubborn.

I gave up on my fancy butane with integrated pipe tools. Here in the cold of Canada all I do is click it again and again with little result. No matter how much I heat the darned thing in my hands first, it just ends in frustration. Moved to a Zippo with pipe insert instead. Just bought a Z-Pipe butane pipe insert that I’ve put into an old Zippo I had. Gonna give it a try.

I use this or a zippo, it's the same price as a zippo but when I smoke out of an expensive pipe I like to use this instead of the zippo for the soft flame and to feel fancy while I light my expensive tobacco in an expensive piece of wood lol.

Happy with the quality? Pretty reliable?

Is it butane with a flint wheel or a button? If it's the button, from what I'm understanding, the issue is usually with the bleeding and the refilling technique: ie. bleeding it with a pencil, (never a pen or metal object,) with the flame set to the lowest setting (always). You should hear no air coming out of it after a few attempts before refilling it and then resetting the flame level - put it at the highest to start and then you can dial it down. You wait five minutes or so after filling to try lighting it - it won't light immediately after filling. Never fill you lighter without the flame setting down to nothing. And ALWAYS bleed it before filling. Note as well, that butane doesn't work that well in cold temperatures - ie. cold winter, versus cold room. When it's colder outside, you can keep it in your pocket.
Yes - I use a Zippo and Bics, but I do have a few butanes torch lighters that I use for cigars - a beautiful Xikar single flame and a Siglo. I've had both for 10 years plus, no problems whatsoever, if you follow those rules above. And yes - it's worth buying good butane - the triple filtered if possible. (I can't remember the brands off the top of my head,).
Yes - the other lighters are good - but the butane is fine as well. Cheap butane lighters can sometimes be a problem, but like many cheap lighters in general, (maybe not counting the Bics,). I've seen so many people throw away butane lighters that they spent good money on when they were perfectly servicable.
If you choose to move to another type of lighter later on, go for it. But I think there is some hope for your butane one as well, especially if you've put a few dollars down on it.

In reading responses, I think that climate plays a key role with lighters. In cold weather the air is very heavy and dense. When we discuss wind, I am not talking about a gentle ocean breeze - I live in a rural area on the prairie.

I too love a soft butane flame in ideal conditions, but my Zippo is the only viable option while smoking outdoors in a snowstorm.

Yup.
