I use a Zippo with Pipe insert, thing just works especially with any type of wind. Indoors I use a Xikar Pipeline that works excellent indoors. No issues with either charring the bowl.

Wooden matches are my go-to for smoking at home, my favorite being Swan Vestas (although they are hard to find in my baliwick). After years of using various butane-fueled lighters including a Dunhill Gemlite, Colibri Clip, IMCO pipe-lighter, and finally a Xikar styled after the aforementioned Colibri, I have settled on a vintage Nimrod Pipeliter for on-the-go smoking. I use it with care, and have not had a problem with rim-charring.
"Those Nimrods are cool too. I'd have one if I could find one."
I see them periodically in display cases of smalls in antique shops.

They are usually on ebay too, but every time I pick one, it goes for more than I want to pay. Neat little machine though.

Sometimes you get lucky. I found that one on eBay a few years ago unused for $25.

Clipper Lighter - a refillable disposable widely available online, particularly on Amazon. It's very cheap, refillable, though not adjustable, & has a replaceable flint.

Curiously the flame is soft when held upright to less-than-horizontal, but doubles in size & strength when tilted below horizontal. This makes it good in the wind & for deep bowls.

I like the Clipper better than Bic lighters, & unlike most disposables, the flint is replaceable with standard commercial flints or those scavenged from spent disposable lighters.
I have yet to try the Linse Lighter.

"The insets[sic] fit any flip top lighter including, ahem, the ones I manufacture."
Would they be the ones with the naked ladies on them that you imported from China?
Regards,
Jay.

They would indeed, Jay. They are tastefully nude .As a guy and artist both, I see unclade lovely ladies as God's masterpiece, and I felt others would believe that as well. I designed the lighters, btw, worked on them with computer program enhancement, and commissioned them to be made by a specific factory in China (a little difficult, that: the Chinese can be just as prudish as some Americans when it comes to nudity).

Matches and Old Boy butane.
I don't like Zippos for lighting pipes. I also use the butane lighters in winds up to about 12 knots. Just learn to shield with your hands - or nearby cowbarn.

Zippo with a pipe insert or disposable Bics for me. Zippo is a great company to deal with too. I sent an old zippo to them for a pipe insert( they do that for free by the way) and when it came back it had been crushed by UPS( ran over by a truck to be exact, there were still tread marks on the envelope). I contacted zippo and they sent me a whole new lighter with both regular and pipe inserts for free. Even covered the shipping.

Help the naive; is butane a hotter flame than that produced by lighter fluid as found in flip top type lighters?

I found that a Colibri Connaught was easy to use and reliable. Nothing fancy, but straight forward light when needed. Got the job done.
