I read in a previous forum about how letting your pipe rest and dry out can have a great deal on the smoke of the tobacco and pipe. As a relitivly newer smoker, I don't have a rotation and have smoked my briar pipe for about three weeks daily. I decided to let it rest for a week and smoke my meerschaum for the time being. I just finished a bowl from my well rested briar and it was the BEST smoke in a long time! So now I am looking to buy other pipes and begin a rotation. Basicly, I just wanted to say thank you to many of you for posting this usefull info about resting your pipe, I have really learned alot from these forums.

If smoked to heavily a briar can get sour after a time. Resting is something that benefits both the pipe and the smoker. Even add ing a corncob to the rotation will help. Though I still can't get past the burning corn flavor enough to really enjoy one. YMMV

I can't say I don't like smoking out of a corncob because i never have, but the idea of smoking out of one just doesn't seem right to me. (not to bash any cob smokers) I have found some very nice pipes on ebay and visited my local tobacco shop in search of some new pipes. Hopefully will win a nice Kaywoodie on ebay tonight!

I'd say a cob is definitely worth a shot. I mean they're plenty cheap and in my experience fine smokes. Of course you'll want the Missouri Meerschaum cobs as they're the best around (well I've heard that Jake Hackert makes cobs as well but I imagine that those are a little harder to come across). I enjoyed my adventure in to them enough to get myself another and I'm thinking I'll need another after that. I've got a straight and natural MacArthur coming to me right now and I'm thinking I'll need a General. Just something about a cob that makes me smile.
Hah on the topic though. I'm glad to hear you've discovered the benefits of a rest period and are having a good time with the community.

Cobs are good things to have for trying new blends. A cheap way of testing things without putting an expensive pipe in peril. After 40+ years of pipe smokeing I just got 2 cobs and they smoke very cool and require a minimum of care.

Sometimes, if I use my "briar" with my aromatics(flavored blends), and not careful, the "sugars" of the "flavorings" have a tendancy of building up a kind of "tacky" or even a kind of "oily" residue inside the bowl. This I believe also is a result of not finishing the whole smoke and putting it out too early. The only way I have found to be rid of this "tacky" stuff is to use a "non-aromatic" a few times, and letting the pipe do all the work. The lesser you have to "scrape" or "bore" a pipe, the happier it will be....remember if you take care of your pipe....the pipe will take care of you !! :worship:  :puffy:
