Leon Russell, born in Oklahoma and died in Nashville, Tenn., today. He is said to have died in his sleep after a series of health problems including a heart attack this summer. He's one of the 70's rockers who loved music more than fame and worked with Dylan, Willie Nelson, Elton John and many others, and whose music spanned the genres from rock to blues, country, gospel, and much more. I heard him in concert once or twice when my life was so geographically scattered I can't remember if it was in Long Beach Ca., Milwaukee, San Diego, or where. In recent years, when I've seen him on TV he was on a cane, but always had a presence and serene cool. He clearly remained respected by the best and most demanding musicians long after the money came harder. Good job, Leon. Play us home.
