Sable: There are obviously members here who would rather post a political screed whenever they see a chance. Or in other words "trolls".

Have any of the addled crackpots amongst the above posters thought to contact a tobacconist, like P&C, and ask them about it?
I'm afraid to contact P&C for fear of triggering an email that will be sent to all customers encouraging us to "BUY NOW before prices go up!"

Jesse, take off the kid gloves and tell us how you really feel!
I was taking the subtle, dignified, and reserved approach. Reticent. Taking the highroad. Worked rather well, don't you agree?

Makes sense to me.

sablebrush, although I am a newbie to the pipe tobacco world I have been smoking cigars for 30+ years. this is not a "vague rumor" these are the words straight from the mouth of the lobbyist last night. He asked me not to publish his name, but I do know for a fact that he is affiliated with General. So I know the authenticity of what he said (he has no motivation to make it up) but, true I don't know the details of the legislation, and I too would like to learn mmore about it, particularly how to stop it!
ssjones, the guy stated the legislation was filled just yesterday, so I wouldn't expect it to show up on any govt website for a while, if ever until it's too late.
ssjones, states can impose additional tobacco taxes, but this is would be a national tax very similar to the pre Feb 15th 2007 tobacco blends law that will almost certainly pass
The motivation for this legislation is coming from the RYO tobacco products, and pipe tobacco is getting lumped into that crowd.

If true, very likely this tax is being pushed by the cigarette industry who I'm sure still have plenty of friends on both sides in Congress.

I was once told by a guy who said he worked for the Feds (but asked that I not use his name) that FEMA was putting drugs in the water.
I just LOST MY SH!T.
And immediately bought 10 pounds of Luxury Navy Flake.

Well 220 pounds in the cellar. When and if this were to actually become true, all I can say is come to Papa. I'll sell mine for 1/2 the tax and make a killing. :nana:

I'm quite sure that the $24 tax will be per pound NOT per tin. Rolling tobacco has approximately $24 per pound federal tax. This tax level would equate to $1.50 per ounce or about $2.66 a tin.

hey guys, in no way is it my intent to spread rumors (that's why my original post asked if anyone else had heard of this), and I certainly don't mean to be disrespectful to anyone here, or troll, or initiate trouble. My goal here in this forum is to learn the pipe as an enjoyable alternative to cigars.
downinit, that could be the case, sounds more probable, make more sense (if there is any sense in the legislation). As I said, idk the details of the legislation, when I heard him say a $24 tax my brain went ape-shit-crazy!

Hahaha - there I was trying to be funny and now I feel bad. I have such cellar envy! Although in all honesty at the rate I smoke I probably have a 10 year supply squirreled away.

I don't think that anyone here thought that about you. I certainly didn't. But the OP is vague. A conversation with a lobbyist about a proposed increase in taxes. Doesn't mention the bill number, nor where it is being considered for implementation, or when it might come to a vote, or where, at what level - state, or national - or the amount of tobacco that this number represents, so yes, vague.
Increases in taxes aren't going to surprise anyone. People want to frame the issue around rights and freedom and other ideological concerns and are missing the reality, which is that the issue is framed around economics - the costs of tobacco VS the gains, and the calculus right now is that tobacco use costs more than the economic gains to the country.

Well, we were lucky that the tax class that pipe tobacco fell into was so much less onerous for so long, and they didn't just do the "tobacco is tobacco, tax the hell out of all of it" a lot sooner. The notion that purveyors of shitty RYO tobacco deliberately mislabeling their garbage wino smoke as "pipe tobacco" hastened the crackdown is plausible, if debatable. In any event, I would like to take this opportunity to thank them for further (and deliberately) misleading anyone who is unclear on the difference between "pipe tobacco" and "cigarette tobacco". In all honesty, I would like to thank them in the dark, from behind, with a fucking 2x4.
