I watched "For a Few Dollars More" yesterday, and Lee van Cleef's pipe had a yellow stem that looked like bakelite, but bakelite wasn't invented until 1907. Were there other stem materials that would be yellow from that period?

That would sure fit the rich bounty hunter role - I just didn't realize that pipe stems were made of amber. Cool tidbit to know. (But I'm guessing the pipes would be pretty costly. :)

I believe it used to be much more readily available but I'm still doing research on that. Along with the cost/availability of meerschaum in the old west it really does fit the persona of his character.

I see pipes with amber stems on ebay all the time. At least that is what the seller calls them.

I'm actually watching For A Few Dollars more as we speak because of all the Van Cleef pipe talk going on around here! I'm loving it...
Van Cleef sure gave it to Klaus Kinski. Meerschaum power! :puffy:

I watched The Good, Bad and Ugly after that one and he had a different pipe than in the first movie shown. Can't recall if it was A Fistful of Dollars or A Few Dollars More..

It was For A Few Dollars More that you saw colcolt, since Van Cleef wasn't in Fistful of Dollars. I'll have to go back and watch the two movies to see how different they are...

Nearly all of these old Westerns are set between 1850 and 1900, Storient. They are a little ambiguous, unless there is direct reference to the Civil War, or a sitting president, of something like that.

Amber stems were being used from 18th century...when does the plot take place ? does any1 know ?
Yavuz, For a Few Dollars More was supposed to be set sometime after 1865 the civil war was over, one of the parts of the movie where LVC was trying to get some information from a Confederate Solider that had no legs. The movie was set to be at the end of the war.
