There’s a seller on eBay that’s auctioning off 122 very nice pipes he bought from an estate.

He started by listing five of what he called Lee Limited pipes. All five were medium sized, light walnut finish, high condition 7 pointed star Lees. Since you hardly ever see a large Lee, a medium is about tops of Lee production. These all look so uniform, and the walnut finish so uncommon, they might have been sold as a five pipe set.

There’s a billiard, a lovat, an apple, a quarter bent tomato, and a quarter bent Rhodesian.

I won all five for $167. Shipping will be about $10 more.

The only other bidder, ran the Lovat from $32 up to $42. The other pipes sold for minimum bids of $25, $32, $34, and $34.

Individually those five pipes would have cost $10 each in the early postwar period.

As a set of five, they might have been $30. A 1946 dollar was worth about 15 times what ours are today.

The seller said all 122 were extremely well cared for, and showed they were smoked but kept clean.

You can smoke a genuine early 7 or 5 point star Lee pipe, take care of it, and never lose a penny if you want to sell.

And every Lee pipe ever made, is well shaped, drilled, and made of the best materials available. They are certain to be wonderful smokers because of Lee’s quality control on the selection of briar used, and especially his oil cure, which made each one smoke cool and sweet from the first bowl. There will be no fills on these pipes, and all will have extremely tight, well figured, but not showy grain.

I’m waiting to see if they don’t have five different stingers. It’s rare to see two Lee pipes with exactly the same removable stinger.

The average price for a nice Lee pipe is about $25-30. These are larger and nicer than average.
