Leaving Obsidian Oil on Stem

Hello everybody. I was wanting to know if anybody has experience applying Obsidian oil on vulcanite stem and then putting it back on rack without wiping it off? Will this damage the stem eventually? Most of the time I get sidetracked doing other things and forget to wipe off the oil. Also, what do you practice to keep your vulcanite in best condition? Thanks.

I apply obsidian oil and put the pipe back in it’s box.

Yes! I hate cleaning stems. I usually smoke a group of pipes for a week or more and I take extra time cleaning the bit before I coat them with obsidian or uv Chapstick before I put them back in the box.

Yea, I am under the impression that impression it is good to do this very thing. No harm far as can tell with personal experience too

A little Obsidain Oil goes a long way. Absolutely no need to slather it on.
Just a smidgin on your fingertip and apply.
Wipe off any excess.

My concern would be if you abandon the pipe for a while.
Oil based products can dry messy and leave a thick uneven surface if just slopped on.

I’ve take to using a dab of Howard’s Butcher Block Comditioner on a small (lens cleaner) cloth. A drop or two worked into the cloth makes for weeks of stem wiping. It’s an emulsion of food grade mineral oil, beeswax, and carnauba.

For many years yes but I prefer flavorless Chap Stick.

Will this damage the stem eventually?

Nope.

I have practice to put them (pipes with vulcanite stems) back on pipe rack with stems lightly coated either obsidian or mineral oil

I wipe a little on and let it sit over night and polish it in with a microfiber in the morning.
This has worked for me without any issues for several years now.
Prior to that I used Original Black Chapstick and the same process for over 30 years.
