Don't knock them out especially if they're hot, a hot pipe is extremely fragile. Use your pipe tool to clean it out when it's still warm.

Careful trying to get the last bit of flavor from the bottom of the bowl. Invariably you will get a mouthful of hot ash, happens to me a couple times a week, you'd think I would learn, but nooooo, I am greedy bastard.

OH man the mouthful of ash post bring back bad memories! I once while trying to get the last bit of baccy at the bottom of a bowl sucked in HOT ash which caused my throat to burn and me to puke. The smoke was amazing except the last puff.

There are many lessons to be learned with each pipe smoking experience. My pipes are a part of me. One time I went through a phase of slipping the pipe in my pockets hot or cold with various disastrous results either to my pipes or to my clothing. The lesson learned here is to set the pipe down in a safe place is best.
My neighbors love the smell of my pipe smoking with me out cleaning or mowing their yards. One day I was cleaning gutters out on one house and for some reason I had a straight pipe accompany me, but I just was not thinking when called over to clean that day. I ended up dipping my pipe in the foul smelling cumulative leaf slime as I was trying to see down the inside of the getter with my pipe comfortably perched to the side of my mouth. The lesson learned for me is that, do not dip pipe where it should not be for the results can be a stinky pipe.

Also be mindful of where you keep your pipes and tobacco. Years ago on my 18th bday I bought a random pipe for $10 or $15 at a flea market to smoke on my birthday. I didn't think much of it and it was kept by my family fireplace. It seemed like a good place at the time. It must have fell into the wood pile because it wound up getting burned during a fire as my brother said "isn't that your pipe?"
Who knows what that pipe could have been worth, it had pearl inlays and a very intricate carving. For all I know it could have been work $5 or $500. It seemed like a good smoker too. But alas I will never know.

Don't just stick the stem in your cheek when lighting to avoid burning your tongue. I found an open sore on my cheek today. Sheesh.

I keep lighting the wrong end... lol....
draw air in slower when lighting the pipe... a slow tight draw works better than a hoover vacuum...
Good advice.

I've only been doing this about a month and I've learned some very expensive lessons already. Don't buy until you know what your buying and why, and how that pipe will broaden your horizons, complement your collection, or just deplete your bank account without cause. And the second thing I learned already is don't go buy $105.00(free shipping yeeha) worth of aromatic pipe tobacco just because everyone says that's what new people prefer until you know YOU prefer it. Other than that it seems all good so far. I like that it doesn't have to be expensive unless you want it to be. That option is always a big plus in a hobby and habit.
Cheers

Told this story before, but:

Was walking from the Staff Club after a long evening, wind blowing real good. Had a

good smoke going in a meerschaum and it got to hot. My pipe cracked/exploded in my face.

Set my mustache on fire and made me puke all that good beer! I was only 24 and didn't

know how to puke and slap out the flames at the same time yet.

You lay face down in the dirt and induce a "sunami" puke. The back wash will extinguish the flames.
That story is hilarious and could only come from a Marine. Excellent.

The larger your pipe collection the more difficult it is to have a fine cake build up on the bowl (there I go writing "bowel" instead of "bowl" again) of any individual pipe...

Make sure you shake your match out thoroughly before tossing it in the ashtray with the other fifty half burnt matches. You may end up having to put out a bonfire while driving.

ALWAYS place a plastic trash can with old face towels in it and put in near the ‘exhaust end’ of the buffing wheel, whether it be a conventional buffer or a drill press buffing set up. It took me two broken stems to figure this out.

When smoking late at night and you find yourself nodding off, don't fight it. Put the pipe down! Having your pipe fall out of your mouth or hand into your lap is extremely unpleasant at best and downright dangerous at worst. Learned that one the hard way a long time ago.
