What about dick dale?
His music is unsettling to my ears. Such an indigent musician would never smoke a pipe.

I’ve got a few of those Jackie Gleason LPs......... damn fine music to my ears.Maybe I missed it. I only saw a conductor’s baton, pizza, coin, etc., but no pipe. Nonetheless, shows like this are certainly missed. The local public broadcasting channel will occasionally air Lawrence Welk and other classic variety-type shows, including Dean Martin, Andy Williams, Carol Burnett, Danny Kaye, Smothers Brothers, and Jackie Gleason, who was a conductor of his own orchestra that I later discovered.
Was that because you were... the last in... the last in... the last in line... see how they shine... maybe you were... You've been down too long in the midnight sea?Did not notice he smoked pipes

Did not notice he smoked pipes
Me too. Also Don Ellis, Donald Bird, Thad Jones/Mel Lewis, Tito Puente, Dizzy Gillespie, Illinois Jacquet, Buddy Rich, etc. Growing up on Long Island was great for big bands!I was LUCKY! Saw Duke in concert before he passed on and Count Basie...
Somewhere, some google analyst is saying WTF, why are there so many Lawrence Welk Pipe searches.Lawrence Welk has been a hero of mine since I turned 60. Does anyone know where I can buy the style of pipe he used? I find it to be much less loud than a Bing style pipe.
I actually saw the Lawrence Welk Orchestra at least 3 times in my childhood, in addition to every Saturday night on TV for years. It was a ”much watch” for the parents. I did really look forward to the Christmas show each year. I, also, (for some reason) loved the Lennon Sisters and Lynn Anderson. The show was generally considered torture for children of my generation. Looking back, it did have its moments.
I spent many hours in church as well. I kind of get that, artistic niceties aside. Some children would also consider being taken to the Sistine Chapel to be torture.
Drowning in pussI'd be fascinated to know how your high school years went. No Elvis, no Beatles, only Welk???
