Way before my time, but I enjoy and appreciate Big Bands as well, particularly around the holidays. We’ve worn out A Swinging Big Band Christmas, and other related CDs… All that you listed are noteworthy, as well as Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Artie Shaw, Harry James, Woody Herman, Gene Krupa, Claude Thornhill, Louis Armstrong… and the list gone on ?
Do yourself a favor and download or get the CD of the famous 1938 Benny Goodman Carnegie Hall Concert. One of the the most signifigant recordings in Jazz history. At the end of the show the Band plays the greatest ever version of Sing, Sing, Sing with tremendous solos by Goodman, James, Krupa and most especially Jess Stacey on the piano. Stacey's improvised solo has long been recognized as one of the greatest moments in Jazz history. It is truly sublime.

I read an interview with him on microfiche at the library last week where he spoke about his love of pipe smoking but unfortunately the microfiche printer no longer worked and I've been unable to find the interview online. If any member has read said interview (I wouldn't be surprised if a few have) please let me know if you know where I can access it online.

LW Was wildly popular when I was kid. My parents thought he was a great. He had a nice tagline calling his band the "champagne music makers". He didn't have to pay much because with few exceptions he was the only guy that would hire the people he hired.

Great story about that recording. It was thought to be lost until a set of air checks turned up in Goodman's home, the hall closet IIRC. It's an amazing concert.

I couldn't find the photo but saw him smoking one in a few episodes. I believe this one features a pipe about 40 mins. in:

Maybe I missed it. I only saw a conductor’s baton, pizza, coin, etc., but no pipe. Nonetheless, shows like this are certainly missed. The local public broadcasting channel will occasionally air Lawrence Welk and other classic variety-type shows, including Dean Martin, Andy Williams, Carol Burnett, Danny Kaye, Smothers Brothers, and Jackie Gleason, who was a conductor of his own orchestra that I later discovered.

What about Al Alberts?

I was LUCKY! Saw Duke in concert before he passed on and Count Basie...
When I lived in Albany, they moved the Newport Jazz Festival to New York City, but the first day was in Saratoga Springs and it was all Big Band. All day. Saw Harry James, Buddy Rich, Woody Herman, Count Basie, Maynard Ferguson, the Ellington Band fronted by his son. Man, that was a day.
