This weighs heavily upon my mind... Laser transit and a precision square. Level is irrelevant, square is key. A lathe will work upside-down as long as it's square. Imagine trying to set a lathe up on a ship, how would you make sure it's flat? Measure from one fixed point in the room to six points on the lathe. Spirit levels are for masons and carpenters, machinists measure from a known point.

Keep your ways free of chips, don’t set anything sharp on them and use plenty of way oil. Take care of your ways and they’ll take care of you.

Like Peter says, Oooh baby, love your ways.

I just noticed the thread title is now "Lathe Humor".

Actually, lathes were originally referred to simply because their rails are called "ways".

This joke-thread was in response to the several What Are You Smoking (WAYS) threads that had gone radioactive the week before, and been locked.

Language oriented me thought it would be funny to pack as many "way sound" words as possible in another thread header... weigh, whey, way, etc. to antagonize the mods a bit. (Why? Cuz I'm evil like that)

It went off into lathe-land however, and never came back.

Almost like it was a lame attempt at humor, or something...

What ways do you weigh the ways your lathe ways align when extracting whey?

In case some didn't read the original, here it is in bolded format.
