The McNiel's gave you plenty of warning though they made no announcement until they closed. The were missing deliveries to vendors and there were shortages of products for at least six months beforehand. And then there were a few of us who know the McNiel's who strongly suspected this but didn't say anything because we were more or less sworn to secrecy. We would get on every thread that discussed shortages and say things like "buy all you can when you can". @georged did this too. And virtually nobody listened. I was surprised that very few people picked up on the KC connection. I live in the KC area and @georged does to, as well as a few others. And we were all in the KC Pipe Club with Mike and Mary.

Quality product flow problem.
I can't believe you're being so stubborn about this. The didn't have any quality problems to speak of. They decided to retire from the business because Mike had major back surgery and Mary (she was in her 70'S) was just tired of doing it, Remember Mike made every tin of tobacco after 1977. Every freakin' tin!! It would be foolish to say he had a quality problem. He had a "my body is breaking down" problem. It was one of "I must be the only who will make product". So, there you have it. To say anything else is pure nonsense.
