New to pipes and tobacco. I bought a pouch of Super Value English blend. It smells exactly like Snuff. I really don't like it and would avoid that again if I knew where the taste and smell was coming from. Is that all English blends, or is it Latakia, or Oriental. This is my first time trying anything not Burley, Virginia, or Cavendish. Thanks guys.

For Oriental get some Sutliff TS24 (bulk) to try. It's an all Oriental blend and is great on its own. Latakia is a smoked Oriental variety and brings char, smoke, campfire, creosote-like flavors. Lancer Slices (bulk) is just Virginia and Latakia and is a good way to experience a lot of Latakia without being overwhelmed.

Orientals are super interesting because they have a wide variety of flavors themselves, but when mixed with other tobaccos they can enhance and change those flavors as well. Plus, there are 6 or 7 different Oriental varieties typically used, again all different on their own. Sutliff has various bulk Oriental options including single varietals, but I like the TS24 blend if there Orientals the best. Super good stuff on it's own it to toss into other blends.

Thank you, I'm trying to soak up all the information I can so I don't waste money, and have a bad experience. I almost quit piping over tongue bite cause I didn't have a good pipe, or technique. This community has been very helpful. Much obliged.

Where are you located? If you are in the USA and are in a state that tobacco can be sent to via USPS, send me a PM and a I can send you some samples of TS24 and Lancer Slices to try!

Take him up on it, @Coreios ! That's one of the great things about these forums - the camaraderie and generosity of the members! To start a PM, just touch his name next to the post and then touch Start PM. Easy peasy!
Yes, people are very generous here. I'd wanna pay it forward though, and I have 2 kids I'm trying to get a Christmas for. Im broke lol. But, I really love it here. Everyone's been so helpful and encouraging. I havent had 1 bad encounter with anyone here it's great.

On the topic of English blends... I just started smoking English blends recently. I've tried both Presbyterian and Plum Pudding. I enjoyed both but got an unexpected linen/fresh flavor, like it reminded me of fabric softener or something. My palette isn't super refined yet so I'm wondering if that's something typical of the oriental or latakia types (?). It wasn't bad just unexpected.

Pipers far and wide give good reviews of Balkan Supreme, if you want to try a widely appreciated one. It is an inexpensive bulk blend listed under the brand Arango. I also like C&D's Super Balkan- also in bulk. It is more of a medium blend than the "super" in the name implies. Also, you might want to give C&D's Byzantium a shot. Another inexpensive bulk blend. This one has little or no virginia and may help with the tongue bite issue.

Yes Presbyterian and Plumb Pudding are very different and distinct tasting baccys.

I like the suggestion of the balkans supreme and super .

I prefer Super as for me it has more kick a bit darker/fuller taste , due to lacking Black Cavendish and the addition of Burley and Perique.
