Also those aromatics can sometimes tend to be pretty swampy. Plus with the way a cob is built I don't think you'll be able to smoke 100% of what's in the bowl.
Have you thought of giving a good Virginia or an English style blend a shot?

And a good briar pipe?

I noticed a big difference in this area when I started drying the baccy more prior to loading and smoking. This may be a little unorthodox, but it works for me... Try drying it out almost completely, say 30-45 min. Pack your pipe, then place your lips around the bowl and put a few long breaths of air through the pipe. The baccy will pull some moisture from your breath. For me, this is just about the perfect dryness. And I get to the bottom, without bad tastes. But it may still take a light or two after a tamp when you get down there.
Good luck!
Have fun experimenting, it comes with the hobby!

Fitzy, I actually find the opposite to be true with my Mark Twain cob. It's a rare event for me to have any dottle in that pipe. It is drilled right into the bottom of the bowl so perhaps that is why I can smoke it mostly down to ash?

Being the delicate little flower newbie that I am :), I'm still on aromatics as I like the flavor and haven't struck out into non-aro yet. Can I get some recommendations of a mild, low nic non spicy blend to try or should I start a new thread?

Even the driest tobacco has moisture. I've read that D&R blends average 16% moisture content and are among the driest tobaccos being shipped.

So....along with: "Good packing with properly dried baccy is the key." I add cadence.

The harder and faster you pull trying to keep a pipe burning can counteract the process you are attempting to complete.

First, a fast cadence creates heat which releases moisture that is absorbed by the leaf in the bottom, then, the tobacco becomes 'soggy and hard to light'.

That is so true Newbroom. I once loaded a bent Falcon with Elizabethan Mixture and totally forgot about it for at least six weeks.
I was going to ditch it but thought I'd give it a go. It smoked fine if a bit quickly but at the end of the smoke the homemade absorbing ring under the bowl was sopping wet!

Jay.
