Well I've ran the numbers. Did some thinking and pipe smoking. Ran numbers again, thought out my examples. Here they are.
The largest Militia in the world are Whitetail deer hunters. Yep. A nation of folks, armed, and ready to walk into the woods. Under all the technicalities. Deer hunters are militarized, and under the same belief. Hunt for some meat. Also they tend to lean towards the same political beliefs. Also, if militarized, they make up one of the largest armies in the world.

Don't get me wrong, I love deer hunting and generally respect fellow deer hunters but I clearly remember my hunter education course. The vast majority of the folks in there (men and women) had poor, if any firearm skills and were woefully out of shape. The deer hunters may have the numbers but lack a host of other attributes and equipment that would make them an effective militia overall.

You're right. Across the world, how many hunters are there? In the US, hunting is a "sport" where in third world countries, hunting and/or militia service is a necessity.

Now you know why "gun control" legislation is so hard to pass here in the U.S. For many of us, gun control means hitting what you're aiming at.
Wish we to the north could say the same! :(

Sometimes I wish I could move to Arizona just to go shopping.
I don't doubt that an armed civilian population is a deterrent to foreign invasion. Thus far the only way to defeat civilian militia is genocide, and we all know how well that usually goes.

Understanding the original definition of Militia as a any Able bodied man between the age of 18 to 60 that can wield a firearm. Then the whole US Population that fits that definition is the largest militia in the world.

"age 18 to 60 that can wield a firearm"
Should be "could wield a firearm" the word "can" indicates you know what your doing, which from what I have seen on civilian ranges is a bit of an overstatement. Yes, there are many Americans that know how to hit what they are aiming at(our version of firearm control). But there is a bunch now days that will not touch a firearm for whatever strange reason, or the other group that does not know the basics of marksmanship (read they have no idea which end the bullet comes out of.) and saftey. I can assure you I will not enter and clear a room with them lol.

Most men and children during the American Revolution could wield a fire arm. Words don't change because people become lazy and dumbed down. But I hear what you are saying fordm60 :)

Are you sure you loaded your pipes with brown stuff? There is a hug gap between hunting deer and being "militarized". Unless your local deer are mobilizing for conquest and have the ability to shoot back you've missed a rather big part of the pie I'm afraid. On the other hand you make a pretty convincing argument for taking the guns away.

Well defined militarized. Which can be a bunch of tribes with machetes, or ISIS with our hummers. The argument of taking guns away will always be there. But attempt it, Then this "militia" may militarize.

Unfortunately too many would be militia members have fallen in love with semi-automatic rifles with large clips believing in quantity of shots makes up for lack of quality shooting. This spray and pray method irks me more than anything. My grandfather taught me to shoot; he grew up in the depression and war years and if he left the house with 3 .22 bullets he better come back with at least 2 animals for the dinner pot. If missing meant you went hungry your marksmanship improved quickly.

If memory serves correctly, one of the higher-up Japanese military leaders of WWII felt an invasion of the ConUS was impractical due to high rates of civilian gun ownership.

"A rifle behind every blade of grass." This is claimed to be from Admiral Yamamoto but there is no proof he or anyone else said it.

Not wanting to get into this one too much. But I can't stop myself lol. A weapon with five or so rounds is not effective in modern combat. That is why they went the way of the Dodo bird. Once you take fire, you need to take cover or concealment, lay down a base of fire, and immediately gain fire superiority as this makes the "bad guys" more worried about the fire they are now taking which stops them from killing you! This is a good thing for you lol! You do not achieve fire superiority with a small magazine weapon it does not matter what kind of action it has.

per the 2nd Amendment I have a right to tank and a bazooka strapped to my ass if I want. Whatever weaponry to wage war on a tyrannical government that imposes its totalitarnian will on US Soil. Damn what the megalomaniacs on the left think or laws that they pass. 2nd trumps it.

@fordm60- I don't think we're really talking outright field engagements here. The Allies dropped a little single-shot stamped-steel .45 (called the "Liberator") to prospective guerillas to wreak unexpected havoc on the occupiers, one sneaky round at a time. "A great gun to get another gun with", I believe they said?
