Why does Lane Limited use numbers and letters as names for some of its tobaccos? I've never seen any other company do this.

I doubt that numbering is anything more than labeling for identifying the blending recipe. Just as the many of their blends have names or combinations of letters and numbers. I bet some of the labels are pretty arcane, while others, if we knew the code, would be forehead slapping, shoulder shrugging obvious.
While it's true that many of the Lanes are re-branded, in my experience, many of the blends were modified by local dealers. I know the old "Tobacco Cache" had many blends concocted for customers which started with a Lane as the base which was then adulterated for a customer. If found pleasing by that customer's friends it was named and put on the shelf for sale.l

A lot of the names are the initials of the person who created the blend (i.e. HGL - Herman G. Lane), and the number might have been the attempt.

Well, there are other number blends like the My Mixture line from Dunhill. Sutliff uses numbers as well, like Mixture 79. In the end, the name is usually meaningless in identifying what kind of blend it is. I just bought a tin of GLP "Gaslight".....And I smoked a bowl of "Imperial Dubec" (what????) earlier today. When I was a new pipe smoker, I kept a cheat sheet on my phone as the blend names pretty much mystified me. Even now, I still butcher some of the names...
