Heheh... I keep finding these old threads to spin up! I actually have a Charatan Special Group 4 that I purchased in 1978, and I am currently sleuthing for historical facts and dating. I will pass on the stuff I have found so far that evidences when it was produced and what the nomenclature meant. I'm surprised at how much information was actually out there. I haven't gotten photos of this one archived yet, but will put some up as soon as I can get to it in a couple days. I find all this history stuff to be quite fascinating!

OK, here is the link to a high-res album of my Charatan Special... it's a Lane-era pipe that I believe was originally intended for a market other than the US, as it lacks the encirled serif "L" Lane Limited logo. The other possibility is that Charatan just missed the stamp, which was known to happen. I'm reading some more articles I found which will shed more light on this.
