How does this compare to an ozone generating ionized air filter unit?

No comparison. By that I mean I can't give one!
But I believe I read that ozone generators shouldn't be run while people are in the room, and then there needs to be buffer time before the room is usable.

It doesn't. They're two different things.

I run mine while I smoke and have never had an issue. I never turn the ozone above the minimum setting, turn it off after I'm done smoking; only running the ionizer (fan). I then burn a lampe berger for about 15 minutes afterwards. I do these things with the central air fan running so air is always being exchanged through the house. My house never smells like smoke.

That's what I do now. It was the lack of an airway between the two ends of the wick that goes into the ceramic disk. Works great now!
